Japanese ultimatum to
Indo China.
Reports from Indo China indicate that
an ultimatum has been served on the
French Colony of Indo China by Japan.
The Japanese are demanding unspecified
military facilities in the Colony; this de-
mand was made after the Colony’s Go-
vernment had rejected Japanese demands
for the transport of troops across Indo
China. It is not known if a time limit fol-
lowed the Japanese note, and negotia-
tions are still continuing. Meanwhile the
Government of the Colony has indicated
that it will defend the country against all
attacks. The Chinese Government has de-
nied reports that they have made a mili-
tary agreement with the Indo-Chinese
Government, but state that they are
watching closely the situation.
Nazis defeated in air
battles.
The Germans lost 54 planes in their at-
tacks on England yesterday. During the
night there y/ere scattered attacks in
many areas. Bombs caused several fires
and damage to house property, but casual-
ties were very slight, it was announced
this morning. The attacks seem to have
been directed mainly against aerodromes,
but it is stated in London that no aero-
drome has been put out of commission.
ICELAND.
(Continued).
Direct trade is on the increase, speeded
up by the Icelandic mercantile fleet which
has grown from some 6,000 gross tons at
the outbreak of the war 1914 to 14,720
gross tons today.
The banking business of Iceland is con-
ducted by three banks, two of which are
State-owned while the State has large
shares in the third. The standard money
unit is the krona (plural kronur) which is
divided into 100 aurar. Only the national
Bank of Iceland may issue bills. The two
other banks, the Fisheries Bank (Utvegs-
banki Islands h. f.) and the Agricultural
Bank (Bunadarbanki Islands) are chiefly
concerned with the branches of occupa-
tional life indicated by their names. In
1918 the savings and other deposits a-
mounted to kr. 36,845,000; in 1937, kr.
63,556,000.
