However, I was not able to identify the great majority of the Ice-
landic laraxacum-sptóes with those previously described; but as I
supposed that part of the species must have been described, I tried to
procure material to help me in their identification. From Professor H.
Lindberg, Finland, I thus received dried specimens of some hundred
Finnish Taraxacum-species; none of these, however, was identical with
the Icelandic species, and from the Riksmuseum in Stockholm I bor-
rowed a number of Norwegian and Scotch species, but in that case
too the result was negative. Once more I tried to identify the species;
in the summer of 1939 I stayed a fortnight in Stockholm to study the
large Taraxacum-matcnal in the Riksmuseum. The result of my studies,
however, was rather negative. Of the 500 Taraxacum-sptcies, which
the material of the Riksmuseum includes, only a very small number
could be taken into consideration at the identification, apart from the
species already determined. A small number of Scandinavian, especially
Norwegian, species are closely related to some Icelandic species, but
complete accordance could not be shown in any case. Differences always
appeared. To solve the question it will surely be necessary to cultivate
the Icelandic as well as the Norwegian species, only in this way will
it be possible to gain certainty. Such cultivation-experiments, however,
will not be easy to start, as it will be very difficult to get fruits of the
species mentioned.
Therefore, rather than referring the Icelandic plants to wrong spe-
cies, I have set up and described as new species all the Icelandic species
which so far, I have not been able to refer with certainty to species al-
ready known.
