Þingvellir, 7/7 1935. In home-fields a large number of Taraxaca
in the stage of fruit-dispersal. In the gorge and in the low meadows
by the lake partly flowering individuals, partly such as were past the
blooming-stage.
Flatey in Breiðifjörður, 10/7 1935. In home-fields, on slopes facing
the sea, by the side of roads, and in ditches there were an immense
number of Taraxaca in full bloom, a few heads had passed the
blooming-stage and none had ripe achenes. Here the flowering season
seemed to be a week or two later than in the places mentioned above.
Unfortunately my visit was a very short one, and there are sure to be
several more species than I was able to find.
Siglufjörður in N. Iceland, 13/7 1935. The Taraxaca were partly
flowering, partly past the blooming-stage.
Hallormsstaður in E. Iceland, 22/7 1935. In home-fields the Taraxaca
were past the blooming-stage or had already shed their fruits. In birch-
copses, on the hill-sides and in the mountain-fields there were flowering
plants and some past the blooming-stage.
Laugar at Breiðamýri in N. Iceland, 22/7 1937. In home-fields at
the bottom of the valley the Taraxaca had shed their fruits, in ditches,
in shady places there were individuals partly past blooming, partly still
in flower. In the lower part of the mountain-sides the Taraxaca were
in the fruit-dispersal stage, higher up the sides they were partly in
flower, partly past blooming, and still higher up flowering had just
begun. Unfortunately I cannot state the height above the floor of the
valley of the late flowering specimens.
Mývatn in N. Iceland, 30/7 1935. In home-fields the Taraxaca
were past the blooming-stage, in grassy lava-fields many plants were
in the fruit-dispersal stage, and in shady lava-holes, and wet meadows
there were specimens past the blooming-stage as well as flowering
plants.
Reykjavík, 8/8 1935. Taraxaca still in flower were to be found in
ditches and meadows.
It is thus possible to study the Icelandic Taraxaca throughout the
summer, for owing to external conditions they flower at different times.
10. Collection and Drying of Taraxaca, etc.
It greatly facilitates the determination of dried Taraxacum-speci-
mens if they have been collected at a time when they are most charac-
teristic. It is best if they still have the outer and intermediate leaves.
