Plantae mediocres—magnae, saepe robustae, raro graciles. Folia vulgo compacta,
crassa, lata, raro longa et leptalea, canescenti- vel atro-viridia, supra saepe purpureo-
maculata, + araneosa; petioli + angusti cum nervo mediano + purpurei. Squamae
involucri exteriores + appressae, vulgo latae, laeves. Calathium mediocre—magnum,
vulgo densum, laete—obscure luteum, interdum obscure croceum; ligulae latae,
marginales subtus stria laete rosea— + purpurea notatae. Antherae saepe polline
carentes. Achenia saepe magna, 4.0—5.8 mm longa (pyramide inclusa), laete
straminea—luteo-brunnea, fusiforma—sat aequilata; pyramide lata et conica vel
longa et cylindrica. Rostrum 7—9 (raro 10—11) mm longum.
Key.
a. Maculata. Upper surface of leaves + copiously blotched with purple.
b. Anthers without pollen.
c. Outer bracts slightly spreading, somewhat patent.
d. Leaves + deeply lobed. Lobes short, often very broad, + backward-curved.
Fruit at top broad and strongly toothed. Pyramid short, hid by the teeth.

dd. Leaves entire and remotely toothed—shallow-lobed. Lobes deltoid—sigmoidic,
patent—slightly reflexed. Fruit very broad, at the top toothed and with a
broad, conic pyramid.
56. T. subeximium M.P.Chr.
cc. Outer bracts appressed, broad ovoid-lanceolate (—linear-lanceolate: see 68
T. leþtoleþis M.P.Chr.).
d. Fruit fusiform with short spines above. Pyramid passing gradually into the
fruit. Leaves greyish-green, rather densely hairy. Head dark-yellow. The stripe
of the marginal ligulae rose—purple-coloured.

dd. Fruit broadest at top, + abruptly contracted into a + long, conic—cylin-
drical pyramid.
e. Outer bracts entirely dark olive-green—blackish-green with a narrow, white
margin, ovoid with a short end. Head dark-yellow—orange-coloured. The
stripe of the marginal ligulae dark purple-coloured. Leaves greyish-green,
rather densely hairy.
58. T. vestmannicum M.P.Chr.
ee. Outer bracts bright olive-green, somewhat hairy in the margin, + red-
margined. Leaves dark-green, firm, slightly hairy.
f. Lobes often with strongly convex upper edge and short, acute end. Outer
bracts with broad base and narrow end. Stripe on the marginal ligulae dark
purple.
59. T. furvum M.P.Chr.
ff. The upper edge of the lobes almost straight. Outer bracts narrowly lan-
ceolate. Marginal ligulae with o—slightly pink stripe.
60. T. faeroenseforme (Ostenf.) M.P.Chr.
bb. Anthers with pollen (see also 56 T. subeximium M.P.Chr.).
c. Heads 50—60 mm broad. Marginal ligulae c. 3.5 mm broad with lively pink-
purple stripe. Leaves greyish-green, very strongly cobweb-hairy.
61. T. stictoþhyllum Dahlst.
cc. Heads 40—50 mm broad. The stripe of the marginal ligulae grey—greyish-
violet or greyish-purple. (see Naevosa).
