Involucrum basi turbinatum. Squamae exteriores angustae, lineares, sensim
acuminatae, piloso-marginatae, + adpressae, + purpureo-brunnescentes, interiores
laete olivaceo-virides, apice obscure purpureae.
Calathium 40—50 mm latum, planum, sat obscure luteum. Ligulae marginales
longae, latae, subtus stria obscure roseo-purpurea notatae.
Antherae polline carentes (vel polliniferae).
Stylus et stigmata virescentia.
Achenium fusco-stramineum, c. 4.5 mm longum, c. 1.4 mm latum, superne dense
sed breviter et minute spinulosum, ceterum + laeve vel tuberculatum, in pyramidem
c. 0.4 mm longam, late conicam sensim abiens.
The leaves of T. leptolepis are lingulate, dark greyish-green, strongly hairy and
with a long terminal lobe; the outer bracts are appressed, narrow, linear, and the
fruits are very finely spinous or warty on the top. The species seems nearly related
to T. subspectabile, but the latter has broad, ovoid outer bracts.

Planta mediocris—sat magna. Folia obscure canescenti-viridia, lutescentia, sat
dense araneosa, sat crispa, sat profunde lobata, petiolis sat latis—angustis, + pur-
pureis, nervo mediano fere ubique purpureo, lobis 3—4 utrinque, alternis, ap-
proximatis, latis, saepe basin versus valde convexis, deltoideis, patulis, in apicem +
longum sensim acuminatis, antice + dentatis, lobo terminali aut breviter cordato-
hastato, acuto, integro, aut magno, obliquo, sagittato-hastato, parce dentato.
Squamae exteriores adpressae—erecto-patentes, 4—2 X 7—10 mm, ovatae—
ovato-lanceolatae, subtus laete olivaceo-virides, haud vel angustissime albo-marginatae,
supra laete virides, apicibus purpureis.
Calathium perobscure luteum, 40—50 mm latum, planum—sat convexum, leviter
radians, ligulae marginales latae, subtus stria cana—cano-violacea notatae, dentibus
purpureis.
Antherae polliniferae.
Stigmata paulo virescentia.
Achenium laete stramineum (162), c. 3.6 mm longum, 1.2 mm latum, superne
parce, acute vel obtuse spinulosum, ceterum + tuberculatum—laeve, in pyramidem
sat late cylindricam, 0.9—1.2 mm longam, inferne + spinulosam abiens. Rostrum
8—9 mm longum.
T. scalenum has crispate, dark yellow-green or greyish-green, densely lobed
leaves, often lobes with a strongly convex upper-edge and lop-sided, cordate terminal
lobe, + appressed, ovoid outer bracts and very dark heads with plenty of pollen.
The species is rather isolated and differs a good deal, especially in the form of the
fruit, from the other Eu-Spectabilia-species.
