Achenium brunneum—rubro-brunneum, 3.3—3.6 mm longum, 1.1—1.3 mm
latum, superne longe erecto-spinulosum, ceterum tuberculatum— + laeve, in pyra-
midem 0.6—0.8 mm longam, cylindricam abiens. Rostrum 11—12 mm longum.
T. brevilobum is closely related to T. naevosum Dahlst. and has previously been
referred to this species, but it differs from it among other things by its dark, grey-
or bluish-green, firm, densely hairy leaves, the dark heads and the brown, slightly
reddish fruit with a distinctly cylindrical pyramid. The fruit of T. naevosum is
stated to have a + broad, conic pyramid. See also T. atroglaucum.

Planta robusta, 20—35 cm alta. Folia cano-viridia, sat dense purpureo-maculata,
breviter araneosa, lingulato-lanceolata, sat profunde lobata, petiolis latis, pallidis—
supra + purpureis, nervo mediano + praesertim ad marginem purpureo, lobis 6—7
utrinque, approximatis—sat distantibus, sat latis, subbrevibus, deltoideis—triangulari-
bus vel in apicem patentem vel porrectum, acutum, sat abrupte abeuntibus, superioribus
antice ad basin sat convexis, integris vel uni- et grosse dentatis, inferioribus margine
superiore + concavis et denticulatis, lobo terminali brevi, late hastato vel galeato,
mucronato, integro.
Involucrum basi sat turbinatum. Squamae exteriores laxe patentes—subrecurvatae,
2.0—3.5 X 10—12 mm, lanceolatae—lineares, obtusae, subtus sat obscure olivaceo-
virides, supra glaucescentes, apice leviter colorato.
Calathium 50—60 mm latum, saturate luteum, radians. Ligulae marginales c.
