The Botany of Iceland - 01.12.1945, Page 5
EDITORS’ NOTE
The present paper was handed in for publication as early as 1938,
but owing to various circumstances it could not be published at
once after it had been received. However, in 1940 the communication
with Iceland stopped before the necessary preparations for its publica-
tion were ended and the necessary means for printing it had been
secured. The publication was further postponed for some time in the
expectation that before long it would be possible to communicate with
Iceland again. Since, however, the author sent word that he much
desired that the paper should be published as soon as possible, we decided
to comply with his wish.
It is probably unavoidable that the work should to some extent
show evidences of the fact that the author has been unable to read the
manuscript in translation before being sent to press; but the editors
have endeavoured as far as possible to see that all should be done in
order that the paper might appear in the best possible form. Some few
things ought perhaps to have been altered, thus for instance the nomen-
clature employed, which has been strictly maintained according to the
manuscript (in accordance with Stefánsson, Flóra íslands, 2nd edition,
1924). Possibly, also, the tables could have been somewhat reduced, but
since this was hardly practicable without corresponding alterations in
the text, we have preferred to have the tables printed in extenso.
The expenses of the translation have been defrayed by the Rask-
0rsted Foundation and those of the publication by that foundation
and the Carlsberg Foundation combined. On behalf of the author we
here express our respectful thanks to these two foundations for
their aid.
The editors.
