4 ICELAND REVIEW Books are gone, photography is dead, the magazine business is dying, good journalism has disappeared. The only things left in the media industry are soft-core 140-word articles about famous people, who have forgotten why they are famous, on the internet. Not true! More books are now being published in Iceland than ever. The photographic landscape is healthier than I can remember with great Icelandic photographers producing different kinds of world- class works, like Baldur Kristjánsson and Helgi Skúlason in this issue. But in the 30-plus years I have been involved in the magazine business, never have the changes been as rapid as in the last five years. The internet is now part of our bodies: literally in our pockets, like a new organ. It’s been a struggle to get paid for quality content on the World Wide Web— but people are still willing to pay for magazines, and books. It’s a different kind of pleasure to see a good text and a nicely composed picture, on fine paper. And that has been the goal of Iceland Review, for more than 50 years: to bring to you the best of culture, like the new Safnahús exhibition (see page 72); culinary creations (see page 66); history, like the story about Auður djúpúðga on page 50; and the different experiences of the people who live here, like the interview with Hlín Baldvinsdóttir (see page 38). Festivals, films, and of course the ever-changing landscape, have been the magnet bringing more than one million visitors to the Republic in 2014. Landscape photography has been my hobby since I started working as a photographer, at this very magazine, a long time ago. Few things have given me more fulfillment than waiting for the right light, in a blizzard, somewhere in Northeast Iceland. Truly my best moments. Now, some of my favorite images, some published in this magazine, are also available in my new book, Iceland Exposed. Most of them were taken on trips for Iceland Review over the last few years. CORRECTION In the last Issue of Iceland RevIew (0215) an error was made in Eiríkur Bergmann Einarsson’s article ‘Locking up the Banksters.’ The following statement is incorrect: “In a controversial move, Iceland’s former Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde was sentenced to suspended imprisonment for not placing the risk of a banking crisis on the agenda of formal cabinet meetings.” Geir was not sentenced to a suspended prison sentence. While Geir was convicted for not placing the risk of a banking crisis on the agenda of formal cabinet meetings, the sentence carried no punishment. It is also important to highlight that Geir was acquitted of the other three, more serious, charges against him and that the state was made to cover his legal costs. Iceland Review apologizes to Geir H. Haarde for this error. themaritimemuseum theart museum #reykjavikloves the city card Choose a card that suits your stay: 24, 48 or 72 hours thermal pools The city card offers unlimited access to public transport, museums, thermal pools and more.
