94 ICELAND REVIEW Some Icelanders affectionately call Hveragerði ‘the capital of hot springs’ due to its renowned geothermal area. Just 40 km (25 miles) from Reykjavík, tourists flock to the region for the hot springs and other local attractions, before continuing on to the Golden Circle of Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park. Whether it’s a clear, sunny day or one with wintry weather, the town’s hot springs attract visitors from around the world. The main geothermal area is situated in the center of town and is a constant reminder that Iceland is very much alive, sitting on a hotbed of natural, geothermal energy. Guests are encouraged to follow the path that treads between the hot springs, and at the end of the walk they can soak their feet in one of the springs. Guests can also cook eggs in one of the hotter springs and taste the sweet rye bread that is baked in the warm ground. It’s a treat no one should miss! HIKER’S PARADISE Hveragerði is also a top destination for hikers as there are several trails in the hills that surround town. The most popular one is the trail to the hot river in Reykjadalur, in which it’s possible to bathe year-round. There are longer treks as well, including up the 803-m (2,635-feet) Hengill mountain, which gives hikers a view of the vast volcanic land- scape. There are also a number of shorter trails around town where guests can enjoy Icelandic nature and its peacefulness at their best. A visit to Hveragerði’s swimming pool is an ideal way to relax after an invigorating hike or a morning exploring the town. The swimming pool has excellent facilities, including a fitness center, hot pots, a whirlpool and a natural steam bath. The town itself is lovely to explore. There are a number of ho- tels, guesthouses and restaurants to make your stay enjoyable, as well as shops and museums to visit. For instance, LA Art Museum (Listasafn Árnesinga) offers several different exhibitions through- out the year. Including traditional and modern art from local art- ists, the museum also has a children’s section, focusing on art for young visitors. CENTRAL LOCATION Hveragerði is the perfect place to base your stay when exploring South Iceland, due partly to its proximity to the Golden Circle. The town is just 52 km (32 miles) from Þingvellir, 70 km (43 miles) from Geysir and 81 km (50 miles) from Gullfoss, which significantly shortens day trips typically taken from Reykjavík. Consider Hver- agerði for the charming town’s attractions and activities and close distance to iconic sites in the south. hveragerdi.is hotsprings.is SPECIAL PROMOTION ENTRANCE TO THE SOUTH Given its proximity to Reykjavík and its healing hot springs, Hveragerði is an all-year destination that shouldn’t be missed.
