LAURA GOODMAN SALVER- SON WINS AWARD It was announced in Toronto that Mrs. Laura Goodman Salverson has won the Ryerson Press Fiction award for 1954 for her novel “Immortal Rock”. The award, a top prize of $1,000.00 Mrs. Salverson has won several awards, one of them being the Gov- ernor General’s award for the best fiction in 1937 with her novel “Dark Weaver.” Mrs. Salverson was the first editor of The Icelandic Canadian, and was at. one time president of the Winnipeg branch of the Canadian Authors’ As- sociation. The Icelandic Canadian follows Mrs. Salverson’s career with interest, and rejoices in her accomplishments. ★ HEADS CITY OF WINNIPEG SCHOOL BOARD At the first meeting of the Winni- peg School Board in January of this year Peter B. Curry was elected to be Chairman of the Board for the year 1954. Mr. Curry has served on the Board for several years. He is the son of Mrs. Bertha Curry, (nee Sigurbjorg Danielsdottir Laxdal) of San Diego, Cal., and the late Mr. Curry. They were former residents of Winnipeg.
