THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN 47 Leather boat ends Atlantic Trip St. John’s (CP) — The leather boat Brendan its four occupants smiling to the welcoming cheers of a crowd of about 400, snuggled into a wharf at Musgrave Harbour in Newfoundland’s Notre Dame Bay about 300 miles north of here last night. The transatlantic sailors, weary of waiting out an off-shore southerly wind for most of the day, accepted a tow over the last couple of miles to the wharf from a boat from the Canadian Coast Guard ship John Cabot. The vessel is being sailed by Tim Sverin of Britain and a three-man crew, The voyage is intended to demonstrate that a sixth-century Irish monk, St. Brendan, may have been the first European to reach the New World.
