44 THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN Vol. 57 #1 The Chieftan went down in a late fall storm (1915) at the mouth of the Red River, as it was heading for Lake Winnipeg. It was a North Easterly storm and the waters were too shallow causing it to run aground. It was loaded with goods. It capsized and sank in a matter of minutes. The crew all escaped on life boats. Later the Cheiftan was washed ashore, basically buried in the sand. It was never salvaged. The back page
