The spectators filled the hall like never before and it was almost impossible to move from one place to another. Well, to chess. All attention was focused on two games, Kasparov-Niko/ic and Spassky-Beljavsky. The World Champ- ion played boldly for a win with white but was always looking with one eye on the other game. Spassky employed the same variation in the Ruy Lopez as against Nikolic earlier in the tournament, and just like there got a good position out of the opening. Beljavsky looked rather nervous but this opening could hardly have surprised him, anyway his pieces became rather tangled. During this Kasparov went hunting with his queen and Nikolic got counterchances which seemed to secure a draw. Kasparov looked disappointed. All of a sudden Spassky sacrificed a knight and Beljavsky’s position looked critica/. Kasparov looked closely and was seen watching the other game while his clock was running. When Spassky played a brilliant 27th move he immediately agreed on a draw with Nikolic. The spectators could now grasp that Beljavsky’s posit- ion was hopeless and Spassky had only to finish the job. He did so in 41 moves but the game could have been much shorter because of Beljavsky’s hopeless position. The irony of all this was that this was Spassky’s first win in the tournament. As cou/d be expected, all other games remained in the shadow ancl indeecl some were quickly drawn. These were Portisch- Speelman, Hjartarson-Andersson, Soko/ov-Yousupov and Tal- Ehlvest. Pétursson lost to Ribli who finally managed to win a game. Too bad. Sax won Korchnoi with the black pieces which confirms the bad form Korchnoi is in. Nunn and Timman decided to play chess, Timman using the French defense. After a harcl fight where Nunn was a pawn up in a knight ending the game was drawn. HRAÐ-SKÁK 371
