Landvarnarbálkur
I samhljóm við úthafsins ölduspil
Skal alt þín minnast, sem finnur til.
Og börn þín í ljúfri lotning
Fagnandi syngja burt húm og haust
Ilærra brimsins og stormsins raust.
Fornhelga F'jalladrotning!
A8 hug-
sjónir hans hafa átt þessum úrslitum að fagna, stafar af star.fsþrótti
nútíðar Islendinga, en í þeirri starfsemi á seinni tið, hefir Jónas
Jónsson verið einna afkastamestur.
Of rhymes and runes thou Outgarth’s warden fairest,
Ocean’s queen, set in either hemisphere,
Who mantle green and wind-blown head-gear wearest.
Our land of mountains, möther-island dear.
Eg hefi teigað þá heilsulind,
I hjarta geymi eg þína mynd:
Þá litfögru listasmíði.
Þótt fjarlægð skilji og fenni spor
í faðmi þér liggur mitt æskuvor
Og vonaheimurinn víði.
Því margblessuð sértu móðir góð,
Þinn máttur finnur hin týndu ljóð,
Er felast á förnum leiðum.
1 gegnum árin því frið eg finn
Og fögnuð við stjörnuhimin þinn
t heiðlofti ’ á þínum heiðum.
S. E. Björnsson.
Thou hast with spirit and with flame inspired,
Isle tiny, many far-off from thy strands.
When midst of embers stand thy fells enfired
Then fares a quaking throughout other lands.
And shackles many shook cff necks of minions,
Who shelter of thy guardian-spirits found:
Of fire-crater with flame’s eagle-pinions,
Of fell in snow and mist-cloud muffled round.
The bargain-hucksters, hurried oar-pulls plying,
Fled off, on forestays crowding every sail,
When fatuous flames thy mountain-peaks were flying,
And waxed the surf and seawards swept the gale.

Fjölþjóða land! Þér fósturbörnin unna
—Framandi kvistir nærðir frjómold þinni,
Víðfeðmi þinna vorsins nægtabrunna
Vakið fá lotning hverju hugans inni.
Manndóminn hækkar hæðsta klifa tindinn,
Hyllingavíddir fósturlandsins skoða.
Hugdiffðir stælir halda beint í vindinn,
Hopa tii hvergi — brattans sigra voða.
Firðsýnir Leifs, þig landið drauma eygði,
Ljósbrota hjúpi morgunsólar vafið,
Hrifningu vöktu — höfuð bljúgur beygði;
Hrakninga volkið sökk í gleymsku kafið.
Kynstórra feðra afl í taugum átti,
Aldrei því fyrri hafði neinum lotið,
Framtaka eðlið sín þó meira mátti.
—Mótun þín síðar, norræns þroska notið.
Landnemafjöld um lendur þinna skóga
Lúans oft kendu, nútíð þótt ei saki.
Vonin að sigra efldi orku nóga,
Ærfingu til að lyfta Grettistaki:
Brautir að ryðja, brúa fúakeldur,
Beislandi fljót, til orku nýrra starfa,
Frjóvgaða reiti rækta þar sem eldur
Ríkti fyr, — til mannfélagsins þarfa.
Fjölþjóða land! Þig kúgun hvergi saki,
Kynþátta mergð þín friðarböndin tengi.
Heill þinni yfir helgar dísir vaki,
Herlúðra gnýrinn sízt að hlustum þrengi.
Lýðræðis liugsjón lýsi þínum börnum
Langt yfir fánýtt dægurmas og þrætur,
Beini þeim framlijá brautum villugjörnum,
Bræðraþels samtök ylji hjartarætur.

Ávarp
Miss Salome Halldorson,
M.L.A., að Gimli, 1.
flokkur hafi fult eins mikinn skiln-
heldur sé enn til í niÖjum þeirra;
og að hann knýji þá nú áfram til aÖ
leggja fram sinn skerf til úrlausnar
á þeim mörgu gátum á sviðum
stjórnmála, sem nú krefjast ráðn-
ingar. MeÖ því getum við hjálpað
til þess að fórn forfeðra okkar
verði ekki til einskis, og að afkom-
endur þeirra eigi eftir að njóta þeirr-
ar fórnar og ala hér langan aldur i
friði og farsæld.
Thy speech, which lays and legends, ’bout Earth’s bowers,
A guard of freedom for the fine art set;
With thee, despite the twilight of all Powers,
A newer, better world is visioned yet.
Thine too are summer’s sunfair, island-mother,
Dales sweet, and hillsides off’ring hours of bliss;
And what is more: the moorlands of no other
Land are as truly charming as of this.
And tear-bright light above thy scaurs is litten,
And lava-scree and grey and awesome sand!
Our fathers’ bones, who were by feyness smitten,
Them fructify, and consecrate this land.
Be warmed this dust and be it watered ever!
Beneath these howe-flames hides assur’d gold—
Ne’er for their tombs should toll be paid, and never
The tolft-fields of their scions should be sold.
Lead thou thyself! Thy folk becomes the fairest,
Free to itself and this ancestral spot—
Believe not, bairn, that brother, who unfairest
And false right pleads, will wrong his brother not.
Believe not that, by bowing to unreason,
For thee augments thy friends’ appraisal good;
The first approach to equity and reason
Is found if men approve of brotherhood.
Still bear we can, though Time’s pleas prove not better,
Be nothing from ns for unfairness shorn—
The others, who confused, their children fetter,
Are cursed by them for having e’er been born.
—How lief it is to mention thee in measures,
Our motherland, to this folk fugitive!
What other thing the exile owns and treasures,
That to thy paean is comparative?
Our island, thou, from thee all fetters flinging,
Shalt free become and walk ways fortunate!
Then in the Westlands we’ll delight, for singing
A day to find, and for thee celebrate.

Ávarp Miss Canada
á Iðavelli 30. júli 1938
(Miss Snjólaug SigurdsonJ
More than sixty years ago our
fathers sought a new home in
a new world. They found a land
called CANADA, then only a
newly-born infant among the
nations of the earth. And
there they found a home,
in the very heart of Can-
ada, along the shores of a vast
inland sea, Lake Winnipeg, the
lake of muddy waters. They
built their homes, they laid the
foundations of a great commun-
ity, they became part of their
adopted land, CANADA.
And so, today, as we look
about us, what do we see? We
observe ourselves as members of
one of the great nations of the
world. We recognize ourselves
as members of the greatest com-
munity of free and independent
nations the world has ever
known, the British Common-
wealth of Nations.
We occupy one-half of a vást
continent, bounded on three
sides by endless seas, and on the
south by a friendly neighbor. We
have no enemies; we are at
peace with all who will be at
peace with us.
We have given the world the
greatest example in all history
of a nation being at peace with
its neighbor. Not a gun nor a
bomb guards the vast frontier
between us and the great Com-
monwealth to the south of us.
But this picture of peace may
not ever remain. Rumblings of
cannon are now heard in too
many parts of the world. Free
men are in too many lands be-
coming slaves. Murmurs of na-
tional disunity are now too often
heard in our own Canada.
Why are these things happen-
ing? What is their cause?
They result from ignorance,
from greed, from hate, from a
sense of injustice, frorfi intoler-
ance and from lack of opportun-
ity. These are thé enemies of
freedom; they are the team-
mates of disruption.
But though we are only a
small part of the Canadian peo-
ple, let us do our share to de-
stroy them. May we make Can-
ada a land of broad opportunity,
a nation speaking the language
of brotherly love..
Let us all unite and work to-
gether in the interest of a com-
mon purpose. And let that com-
mon purpose be: Preservation of
our freedom; retention of our
liberties; the mitigation of pov-
erty; the unending search for
greater happiness for us all.
And let Canada be only one
country, united and free. And
let us all be Canadians, whether
we live on the shores of the
Atlantic Ocean, or in the ranges
of the Rocky Mountains; or
whether we be the descendants
of Icelandic pioneers, who over
sixty years ago, adopted as their
new home, the shores of Lake
Winnipeg.
“And thou, O my country, from
many made one,
Last-born of the nations, at
morning thy sun,
Arise to the place thou art given
to fill,
And lead the world—triumph of
peace and good-will!”
