FOUR RACEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS
At the December meeting .
of the Icelandic Canadian
Club of Western Manitoba
the membership decided to
award four. one hundred
dollar scholarships to
deserving young artists of
the Brandon area. We are
pleased to announce
scholarships to Melvi’n
Mclnnis. Pauline Martin,
Melvin Martin and Christine
McMahon.
medicine. As well as
studying; he lectures four to
eight hours a week in
anatomy to first year
students and helps in the
preparation of slides for the
Anatomy Laboratory.
Melvin is married to Svava
Simundson and they have an
infant daughter, Sigrun
Thora. He is the maternal
grandson of Hrund Skulason
of W'innipeg, formerly from
Christine McMahon as Marienne Leitnetzer in Der
Rosenkavalier June 1978 — Detmold, Germany
Melvin Mclnnis, the son of
Gordon and Gudrun Mclnnis
of Brandon. is in third year
Medicine at the University
of Iceland. Melvin has had a
long record of academic
excellence. In Grade 11, he
received a scholarship for
high praficiency in
Mathematics and English.
After Grade 12, he spent a
•year in Reykjavik and on a
farm in Northern Iceland to
master the Icelandic
Ianguage, and he fell in love
with the country. He
returned to take his pre-
Medicine program at the
University of Manitoba
where he received a
scholarship for his Icelandic
studies and a scholarship
from the Canada Iceland
Foundation. Melvin
returned to Iceland to study
Geysir. and the late Jonas
Skulason. and the paternal
grandson of Victoria
Valdimarson of Brandon,
formerly of Langruth and
the late Arthur Mclnnis.

Martin are the children of
Halldor and Lilja Martin of
Brandon. For information on

Christine McMahon, the
daughter of Olof McMahon
of Brandon and the late
Gerald McMahon, is in her
third year of a' Voice
program in Detmold, West
Germany under Herr
Lindenbaum. She began her
formal singing career in
1968 under Professors
Lucine Needham and
Leonard Mayoh of Brandon
University. She graduated
from Brandon University
with a Bachelor of Arts
dcgree. spent a year
studving Drama at the
University of Alberta with a
Jolin Robbins Scholarship
and then spent a year
developing theatrical ex-
portise in Montreal.
Christine took a three year
degree in Music at McGill
University prior to going to
Detmold. This year she won
a D.A.D. Scholarship (an
award provided by the West
German government). Last
summer. she had the op-
portunity to sing in the
Wagnorian Festival in
Bavaria and has been in-
vited to return. Christine is
the granddaughter of the
late Skuli and Gudrun
Sigfusson from Lundar and
Anne McMahon from
Chilliwack. B.C. and the late
Howard McMahon.

Ma rtin perform at
Brandon University
School of Music
Pauline and Melvin
Martin, both former
students at the Brandon
University School of Music,
returned to Brandon to give
a joint recital on Sunday,
February 24 at 3:00 p.m. in
the Evans Lecture Theatre.
Their programme included
thc Brahms Violin Sonata
Op. 78 and two piano
sonatas - one by Bartok and
Beethoven's Opus 109.
Paulina Martín
Pauline studied piano
with Gordon Macpherson
while in Brandon and won
nianv awards and
scholarships. She continued
her studies with-Camaniana
Bratuz at the University of
Western Ontario and with
Mennahem Pressler at
Indiana University where
she completed Bachelor of
Music and Master of Music
dogrees in piano per-
formances. After a year on
the faculty of the Eastern
Mennonite College in
Harrisonburg. Virginia.
where she taught piano and
theorv. she enrolled in the
Ðoctor of Music programme
at the University of
Michigan. where her
teachcrs are Theodore
Lettvin and Eugene Bössart.
Pauline has received
scholarships. bursaries and
assistantships at Indiana
University and the
University of Michigan. She
is at present an assistant
piano instructor at the same
time as she continues her
doctoral studies.
Melvin studied violi-n in
Brandon with Francis
Chaplin and also received
many awards and
scholarships. During that
time he was twice a member
of thc National Youth Or-
chestra. He obtained his
Bachclor of Musi’c degree in
violin performance at In-
diana University. where his
teachers were James
Buswell. Franco Gulli and
Lawrence Shapiro. At the
prosent he is enrolled in the
Master of Music programme
at the University of
Michigan and is studying
violin with Paul
Makanowitzky. He has
received scholarships and
assistantships from the
University of Michigan and
is presently Concert Master
of its Svmphony Orchestra.
Melvin Martín

Melvin performed a joint
recital on CKX-TV, Brandon
on February 26.
Pauline and Melvin are of
Icelandic descent. Their
p.arents Ilalldor and Lilja
Martin. formerly of Hnausa.
Manitoba, now live in
Brandon.
