First Lutheran Church hosts refugees
First Lutheran Church of Winnipeg
hosted a mini-retreat to acquaint
church members and friends with
the plight and needs of refugees ar-
riving in Canada from strife-torn
countries around the world. Pastor
John Arvidson, still recuperating
from recent eye surgery, welcomed
Marlene Reguly, Executive Director
of the Interfaith Immigration Coun-
cil of Winnipeg, the refugees, and
church members and friends. Assis-
tant Pastor Ingthor Isfeld then
chaired the meeting for the balance
of the evening.
Marlene addressed general refugee
problems and Canada's role and
need, not only to help the refugees,
but to help itself grow as an in-
dustrialized nation. Refugees become
Canadian creators of opportunity,
producers and consumers. Bear in
mind that many of our ancestors
were refugees on arrival in Canada.
Canada and the United States were
built by immigrants from other na-
tions. We tend to forget that.
Following her opening remarks,
Marlene introduced refugees from
Chile, E1 Salvador, Eritrea (Ethiopia)
and Cambodia.
A few of these shared their per-
sonal experiences with great difficul-
ty, emotionally and linguistically.
However, all present understood the
unspeakably desperate circum-
stances in which these people found
themselves. All had left family
behind in an all-consuming quest for
survival. The human suffering and
degradation is difficult for most of us
to comprehend from the security and
comfort of our homes in Canada, but
it comes through in the voices and
faces of these survivors . . . and these
are literally the few survivors. Many
millions still remain and continue to
need help. (Names and pictures of
refugees are intentionally omitted).
You can get involved if you want
to . . . call the Interfaith Immigration
Council, (204) 775-8601. Find out,
first-hand, how things really are.
