Það hefir verið hljóðara en
skyldi um þann merka menn-
ingaratburð, sem stofnun ís-
lenzks kennarastóls við Winni-
pegháskóla er. Með því hefir
verið stigið stórt spor til að
styrkja menningartengslin milli
Austur-íslendinga og Vestur-
Islendinga og til að viðhalda ís-
lenzkri menningu í Vesturheimi.
Það sýnir og vel hug Vestur-
íslendinga til þessara mála, að
kennarastóll þessi er til orðinn
vegna frjálsra framlaga þeirra.
Merkur maður, sem er þess-
um málum nákunnugur vegna
dvalar vestan hafs, séra Jakob
Jónsson, minntist þessa atburð-
ar nýlega í útvarpsræðu á at-
hyglisverðan hátt. Hann sagði
m. a.:
Eins og kunnugt er kom
Árni Eggertsson lögfræðingur
frá Winnipeg hingað til þess að
vera meðal þeirra, sem heilsuðu
Gullfossi. Á meðan hann dvaldi
hér, notaði hann tækifærið til
þess að flytja okkur gleðitíðindi,
sem eru svo merkileg, að telja
má til mestu viðburða, -Bem hér
hafa skeð í menningarlegu tilliti
á síðustu árum, og það í fleiru
en einu tilliti. Ég á við það, að
hann skýrði útvarpshlustendum
frá því mikla afreki Vestur-ís-
lendinga að stofna kennarastól
í íslenzkum fræðum við háskól-
ann í Winnipeg. Árni skýrði vel
og skilmerkilega frá gangi máls-
ins, en ég efast um það samt
sem áður, að landsmenn hafi
gert sér það fyllilega ljóst, hvað
hér er um að vera.
1 fyrsta lagi er hér að rætast
draumur, sem allt frá landnáms-
árunum vestra hefir búið íslend-
ingum í brjósti. Það var átakan-
legt en þó hugnæmt um leið, að
heyra um þá seiglu, þá óbilandi
þrautseigju, sem landarnir hafa
sýnt. Áratugum saman lifir hug-
sjónin, og við og við er um hana
rætt, unz ástæðurnar eru að lok-

um orðnar svo góðar, að mögu-
legt er að hefja fjársöfnun, svo
að nokkru nemi.
Við marga háskóla vestan
hafs er kennaraembættunum
haldið við með sérstökum sjóð-
um, sem þurfa þá að vera svo
miklir, að ekki sé nein hætta á
því, að leggja þurfi kennarastól-
inn niður í miðjum kliðum.
Vextirnir einir verða í raun og
veru að nægja til þess að launa
prófessorinn og standa straum
af öðrum kostnaði, sem af em-
bættinu hlýst. Hér á landi erum
vér vön því, að embætti séu
stofnuð, ef þurfa þykir, og féð
er síðan tekið með sköttum, án
tillits til þess, hvað hver ein-
staklingur vill af hendi láta.
Það væri fróðlegt að vita, hve
margir íslenzkir auðmenn vildu
leggja það á sig að stofna kenn-
araembætti í einhverjum fræð-
um við háskóla íslands, sem
ekki gæfi þeim nokkurn skapað-
an hlut í aðra hönd í efnalegu
tilliti. En meðal Vestur-íslend-
I inga er alls ekki um eintóma
auðmenn að ræða. Margir
þeirra, sem láta fé af hendi
rakna, eru menn, sem hafa spar-
að saman nokkrar upphæðir,
sem enginn mundi ásaka þá fyr-
ir að nota handa sjálfum sér, ef
þeir kysu það heldur. En þeir
eru hugsjónamenn, sem unna
tungu sinni og menningu. Það
hefir mikið verið um það rætt,
hve vel landar vestan hafs brugð
ust við þegar Eimskipafélag Is-
lands var stofnað. Ég hygg, að
það séu ekki miklar ýkjur, þótt
ég segi, að þetta sé engu minna
átak og sýni engu minni ætt-
jarðarást. —
Stofnun íslenzka kennarastóls
ins í Winnipeg er vissulega at-
burður, sem Austur-íslending-
um er skylt að meta að verð-
leikum. Hann mætti og vera
þeim ný sönnun um vilja íslend-
inga vestan hafs til að viðhalda
tengslunum við gamla heima-
landið. Nú ber Austur-íslend-
ingum að sýna, að þeir virði
þennan vilja og sýni það í verki,
að ekki skortir þá síður hug og
dug til að viðhalda þessum
frændsemisböndum, er geta ver-
ið báðum aðilum til mikils gagns
og menningarauka.
