Gimli, on October 21st, 1875. New Iceland
was then located north of the Province of
Manitoba in the unorganized Territory of
Keewatin.-----This reserch project is be-
ing conducted by Professor Haraldur Bessa-
son and Miss Gudny Bjomsdóttir of the De-
partment of Icelandic Language and Litera-
ture of the University of Manitoba with a
grant from the Canada Iceland Foundation.
19*** Submissions have been made to the Post-
master General. The Honourable Andre Ou-
ellet, for the issuance of a commemorative
stamp on the occasion of the 100 Years of
Settlement in Winnipeg and in New Ice-
land in the District of Keewatin along the
west shore of Lake Winnipeg.

Corporation of a monument suitably design-
ed by Professor Gissur Eliasson of the School
of Art of the University of Manitoba. On
this plaque, the names of the first Iceland-
ers to reach New Iceland in 1875 will be

lOOth Anniversary of the Icelandic settle-
ment in Westem Canada.
