A page in the House of Commons
Kerry Stirton
It was "just a fluke" that Kerry
Stirton happened to notice a
paragraph about the Parliamentary
Page Programme in a bulletin sent
around by his guidance councillor at
Vincent Massey Collegiate.
Kerry took the time to read it and
as a result applied and was accepted
for the programme. He is one of 38
top students selected from schools
across Canada to attend first year
university in Ottawa while working
as a Page Boy in the House of Com-
mons.
He is enrolled in Business Ad-
ministration at the University of Ot-
tawa, where he lives in residence
and he plans to go into law after get-
ting his BA.
Before starting on his training for
work in the House, Kerry was put
into two weeks of French immer-
sion — intensive langauge training.
His colleagues say he speaks
remarkably well — they are surpris-
ed at how quickly he has taken to
his second language.
His duties in the House of Com-
mons take up about 15 hours per
week, and through the co-operation
of the programme director and the
university, he is able to fit class
timetables around his working
hours.
Kerry really appreciates the op-
portunity he gets to speak French,
and practices every qhance he gets.
Work, studies and classes leave
little time for anything else, but
Kerry managed to take some lessons
in sky diving at the Ottawa Sky Div-
ing Club. He is interested in skating
and skiing as well, and enjoys going
out Fridays and Saturdays. When
the Höuse sat again at the end of
January, Kerry brought his skates
back to skate on the longest skating
rink in the world, the Rideau Canal.
Kerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Stirton. His mother's maiden
name was Laurie Asgeirson. Her
parents came from Akureyri more
than 50 years ago and settled in
Winnipeg.
Þorrablót in North America
Most Icelandic Clubs of North
America are busy preparing their
annual Þorrablót, which normally is
held in February or March. In
Manitoba, at least two have already
been organized. The one in Win-
nipeg will take place at Vasalund,
February 6 and in Brandon at
Harry's Ukrainian Kitchen, the
same day. A þorrablót has also
been held in Arborg over the last
few years.
The Icclandic Society of Ed-
monton, Norðurljós Chapter will
hold its Þorrablót February 27.
Plans are well underway and those
interested in participating should
make reservations soon.
The Icclandic Canadian Club
of British Coiumbia will hold its
þorrablót February 20, at St. Ber-
nadette Parish Hall, South Surrey.
,And finally, the Icelandic Society
of Northern California has
rescheduled its þorrablót. It was to
be in April but will take place
February 27.
Þorrablót is quite an affair in
North America and anyone in-
terested in experiencing this unique
event should contact members of
the clubs mentioned above.
As far as we know, the first þorra-
blót took place. in Winnipeg, in
1903. Þorsteinn Þ. Þorsteinsson
stated in his book, Vestmenn, that
a group of Icelandic immigrants
from Akureyri, Iceland met in 1902,
organized the Helgi magri Club, and
celebrated the first þorrablót in
1903.
