Funeral service held for
Barney Gunnlaugson
Bjorn (Barney) Gunnlaugson •
Sept. 29, 1890-Jan. 14, 1983
Barney was born at Bru on the
homestead of his parents, Brynjolfur
and Halldora Gunnlaugson (28-5-13
in the R.M. of Argyle, where Marcel
Almey now resides). He received
what education was available to him
at Thor and Bru Schools.
In 1910, with the desire to become
independent pioneers, he and his
brother Magnus took homesteads at
D'Arcy, Sask. on land presently own-
ed and íarmed by his son, Alfred.
In 1923, on July 4, he married the
neighbor’s daughter, L. Viola Thomp-
son. Their home was blessed with
seven children, all of whom surviv-
ed his passing: Edith, Ray", Haldora,
Ruth, Leo, Alfred and Walter; and
eventually with twenty grand-
children, ten great grandchildren and
several step-grandchildren.
Barney's life was also blessed with
generally good health, with success
in farming and in business — he was
a founding member of the Grain
Growers and of the Sask. Wheat Pool
and sat as a school trustee for fifteen
years.
In 1961 he and Viola took up
residence in their home in D'Arcy
where he passed quietly into eternal
rest.
Barney is also survived by two
sisters, Ingibjorg Hurst of Saskatoon,
and Veiga Johnson of Baldur, Man.
He, was predeceased by nine
brothers and sisters: Sigvaldi
(Walter), Brynjolfur, Josep, Valger-'
dur, Hannesina (Mrs. Percy Bull),
Hlega, Magnus (Mike), Carolina
(Mrs. Sheridan Dunning), Hannes
(Harry); three grandsons, Trevor
Gunnlaugson, Barney Leaky, and
Barney Gunnlaugson.
Barney was the last of the group of
Baldurites who homesteaded in that
area of Sask. Others were the
Walkins, the Arnolds, and Helgi
Helgason. He was the oldest former
resident to return here fof the R.M.
of Argyle Centennial — an occasion
he thoroughly enjoyed.
