Icelandic Canadian Club
of B.C. Thorrablót
A very successful Thorrablót was
held by the Icelandic Canadian Club
of B.C., on March 9, at the Engineers
Auditorium in Burnaby.
The balmy weather, with the
mountains silhouetted against a blaz-
ing western sky, proved to be a
significant harbinger of spring for this
annual gathering, Thorrablót, which
bids farewell to the bad season and
a welcome to spring.
Kent Hillman, guitarist, and pianist
Herman Eyford entertained during
the cocktail hour. This was followed
by a delicious dinner of Roast Baron
of Beef.
Club President Robert Asgeirson
intro'duced Laura King, who is this
year's club princess. He extended a
welcome to all, and special greetings
to Mayor Ted Arnason of Gimli, and
his wife Marge, as well as to several
people from Iceland, some of whom
are attending university at Simon
Fraser and U.B.C.

90 Years Young

90th birthday on February 23, 1985.
A Come and Go Tea was held in her
honor during the afternoon at the
home of her daughter and son-in-law
Kitty and Jack Ralston, Bowmanville,
Ont. There were 78 guests who sign-
ed the guest book.
In the evening 48 children, grand-
children, and great grandchildren
and special friend Mrs. Johanna Sny-
dal sat down to a lovely dinner at the
Darlington Marina at Bowmanville.
Dancing and entertainment and the
singing of ''Happy Birthday'' Mother
and Amma, was led by her eldest
grandson, Keith Frederickson.
Margaret had ten children, eight of
whom are surviving, 31 grand-
children and 48 great grandchildren.

íslenskutíma las einn nemandinn

er ekkert sjónvarp hjá okkur. Þá fer
fólk oft eitthvað út, í bíó, í líkhús eða
á fundi." Fyrir þá sem ekki fylgjast
vel með þá þýðir orðið líkhús
morgue. Það eru liðin nokkur ár
síðan ég fór síðast heim til íslands og
getur því vel verið að þessi nýi siður
hafi verið tekinn upp á hin síðustu ár.
Kannski koma þreyttir sjomenn nú í
land á fimmtudögum og til að hressa
upp á sálartetrið þá bjóða þeir e.t.v.
konum sínum í líkhúsið. íslendingar

Taxman's job unpopular
As in most other countries, taxmen
^are unpopular in Iceland — not only
with taxpayers, but just as much
among job-hunters. Advertisements
placed last summer for staff to take
part in a stepped-up campaign against
tax evasion only managed to fill ten
of twenty new positions. A spokes-
man explained that the problem was
not finding people to fill these posts,
but rather ensuring that applicants
were suited to the job, although he
admitted that relatively low pay also
played a part in the poor response.
Human nature also seemed to havr
something to say — four vacancies at
the tax investigation department
were easily filled, while only six out
of sixteen jobs at tax offices them-
selves have so far been taken.
Question of
the Week
greetings from the Gimli Chapter of
the Icelandic National League. On
behalf of Viking Travel, Marge Ar-
nason made a presentation to the
Icelandic Canadian Club of B.C., of
a tour ticket to Iceland. This will be
used as a raffle prize by the Club.
Mrs. Alma Johannson presented
$500, as a gift from Solskin Society
of Vancouver, to the Icelandic Cana-
dian Club.
A presentation of Life Membership
in the Icelandic Canadian Club was
made to Mrs. Jona Thorlacius, by
President Asgeirson, who spoke of
her many contributions to the Icelan-
dic cultural scene. Jona Thorlacius
has become something of a celebrity
with her Jona dolls, which have been
a source of wonder and delight to
many a child.
Heather Ireland, accompanied by
Herman Eyford at the piano, gave a
wonderful rendition of several old
and familiar Icelandic songs. She is
an accomplished singer and a
member of the Vancouver Óhamber
Choir.
Raffle prize winners were: 1. Hand
knitted Icelandic Woollen Dress, J.
Axdal; 2. Smoked Leg of Lamb
(Hangikjot) $. Childerhose; 3. Set of
Icelandic (Séramic Tiles, Mrs. B.
Bardal.
Kris Summer's Big Swing Band,
which plays music reminiscent of the
Glenn Miller style, provided lively
dance music.
During the evening intermission,
skyr, which was donated by Viking
Travel of Gimli, as well as vinirterta
and coffee, were served to the guests,
to top off an ''evening to remember."
