LÖGBERG CENTENNIAL YEAR, FÖSTUDAGUR 3. JÚNÍ 1988-7 What's new Greenpeace claims one company has ceased to purchase fish from Ice- land because of their intervention. The Icelandic manager of Iceland Freezing Plants said, "It is not correct to trust Greenpeace comments in these matters." Greenpeace has been fund raising in Britain featuring Whales in their advertising. Courtesy Morgunblað. * * * According to the Morgunblað, changes in the make-up of the guard at the entrance of Keflavík, were to come into effect March 14. During the past these guard duties have been carried out by Icelandic personnel. They will be joined by American military police. This arrangement is due to changes in the area security of the new Leif Eiriksson facility. The area is closed to all those who do not have reasons for entering the protect- ed area. The guarding of the en- trances is in accordance with the Ice- land-United States Protective Agree- ment of May 5, 1951. When you visit Iceland, do not be surprised if an American asks for your identity at the Keflavík Airport in Iceland. * * * This Thursday, May 19 Hrund Skulason is leaving for a seven-week visit to Iceland, where she will be visiting with friends and relatives. She was born in Iceland. Hrund is a resident in the new Be- telstadur apartment complex in Winnipeg. * * * The Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto report, ''Our mailing and membership list is now about 525. With our ongoing outreach through the phonebooks and established membership, we hope to continue growing. Certainly, there are a lot of people here of Icelandic background and other connections.'' They had 217 guests at their Ice- landic Food Night on March 6 and report, "A good time was had by all!" We acknowledge with thanks their generous donation of $500 to Lögberg-Heimskringla. * * * Two of our favourite Icelanders visited their old home territory re- cently. Siggi Sigurdson loaded his van with 1200 newly hatched chicks and delivered them to his niece in Arborg, Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. Arnason: As much as I would like to claim credit for submitting the article on The Falcons which appeared on the last page of the April 8 issue of your paper, I must decline. Apparently the article got mixed up with my survey answer sheet. I sus- pect the information was sent to you by someone named Goodman, pos- sibly from Washington State as there are many people by that name here. Hopefully, the person deserving the credit will contact you so that a cor- rection can be printed in a future issue. In the meantime, I enjoyed seeing my name in print associated with such a meritorious item. I will be alert to any other achievements of the Icelanders so that they may be duly reported in the future. Thanks again for some more in- spirational reading. This shows Siggi knows what he is doing, for newly incubated chicks are sen- sitive and require very little to do them in. Accompanying Siggi was Fanney Helgason who took the opportunity to touch home base and spend a few hours in Arborg. They are both resi- dents at Betelstadur in West Winnipeg. * * * What is more delightful than to meet and chat with a lady who in younger days cooked in Icelandic fishing and logging camps on and around Lake Winnipeg. Ada Foster formerly Sigvaldason of the Víðer District near Arborg came to visit with Fanney Helgason. Ada's father took her to these camps and her job was to feed hun- gry Icelandic fishermen and loggers in temporary quarters, isolated for several months at a time. Once there the only thing plentiful was wood for fuel, water and fish if at a fishing camp. On more than one occassion it was the writer's good fortune to stop in and have a Lake Winnipeg Icelandic Minnist BETEL í erfðaskrám yðar woman cook serve up a meal, after eating ordinary fare that the fisher- men themselves cooked. The Westin servings at the recent Icelandic Festival Dinner and Dance did not begin to compare with the backwoods Lake Winnipeg fare, but then we were not counting calories in those days. Ada served up superb meals, she can also serve some unique and hap- py stories about of her Lake Winni- peg days. She talks about her people having been "fjailafólk", mountain people. Watch for a translated story about fjallafólk. MESSUBOÐ Fyrsta Lúterska Kirkja í Pastor Ingthor I. Isfeld 10:30 a.m. The Service followed by Sunday School & Coffee hour.
