Clarence Swainson retires
Letters to the Editor
Clarence Thorsteinn Swainson was
born to Ingi and Liney Swainson in
1932 in the Baldur-Grund area. His
paternal grandparents were Thor-
steinn and Kristin Swainson and
maternal grandparents Kristjan and
Freda Oleson. His great-grandfather
was Eyolfur Jonson, a pioneer of the
Skalholt district north of Glenboro.
Clare, as he is always called,
moved with his family to Glenboro
where he received his early school-
ing. They moved to Winnipeg in 1949
and Clare finished high school at
Daniel Mclntyre Collegiate Institute.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree
in 1954 and in 1956 a Bachelor of
Education from United College. In
1972 he obtained a Master of Educa-
tion from the University of
Manitoba.
From 1956 to 1963, Clare taught
and was Drama Director at Hapnot
Collegiate in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He
taught and served as Department
Head and Drama Director at Garden
City Collegiate, Seven Oaks School
Division #10, from 1963 to 1969.

In the summer of 1968 he instruct- mer at Guyana Teachers' College,
ed at Kenya Teachers' College, Guyana, South America. Both were
Kenya, Africa and the following sum- Project Overseas appointments of the
Canadian Teachers' Federation.
From 1969 to 1972 Clare was ap-
pointed by the Canadian Internation-
al Development Agency to teach at
the St. Lucia Teachers' College, Cas-
tries, St. Lucia.
Clare taught and served as Depart-
ment Head from 1972 to 1979 at
West Kildonan Collegiate, Seven
Oaks School Division #10, West Kil-
donan. In the mid 1970's he was
President of the Seven Oaks
Teachers' Association.
He was English Department Head
at Maples Collegiate, Seven Oaks
School Division #10, West Kildonan
where he taught from 1979 to 1989.
Mr. Swainson retired June 30, 1989
and lives in Winnipeg with his wife
Bernice. They have two children,
Paul, who like his father is a mem-
ber of the teaching profession, and
Jocelyn. Jocelyn has two children,
Jasmine and Jesse.
Have a good retirement; golfing,
curling, travelling or whatever strikes
your fancy.

I believe the best way to get that
type of hairdo is by shoving the in-
dex finger into a light socket while
standing in a bathtub.

Dear Editor,
I write to thank you for publishing
the inquiry concerning Stefan Doug-
las Palmason in your "Letters to the
Editor'' column of 9 June.
This has resulted in a letter from
his close friend Emil Gillies of Win-
nipeg, who has sent me a cutting
from the Winnipeg Free Press with
an obituary and photograph of F/Sgt
Palmason (10.7.42). Mr. Gillies will
try to trace the two sisters and
brother of F/Sgt Palmason.
You may be interested in the back-
ground to my inquiry. There is a Roll
of Honour printed to the airmen bu-
ried at St. John's Beck Row Milden-
hall, compiled by Peter and Maureen
Wilson of Coventry. Some years ago
I iearned of this and offered to assist
in tracing relatives of the airmen. I
have had some measure of succéss in
cases where Mr. and Mrs. Wilson
had not been successful, and to date
we have now traced relatives of 37
of the 51 RAF lads (8 of the 14 RCAF,
4 of the 5 RAAF and all 6 RNZAF).
The Roll of Honour consists of a
"word picture" of each airman, and
in many cases a photograph. A loose
leaf copy is kept in the church at St.
John's Beck Row and it is the inten-
tion to update this with information

Stefan Douglas Palmason was
killed on the 6th of July, 1942, when
Wellington X3356 crashed near
Molesworth, England. We have
traced relatives of all but two of the
RCAF crew, ie F/Sgt Palmason and
PO R.S. Cowell, who prior to enlist-
ment lived in Edmonton and worked
in the local Public Works Dept. He
was married but his wife has remar-
ried. Also untraced are relatives of
the following:
F/Sgt Louis Kowalski, born in
Lougheed, Alta., and attended Es-
tevan High School, killed 11.3.42
serving with 149 Sqdn RAF.
F/Sgt J.J.E. Cote, Wireless Op, Air
Gunner, 115 Sqdn, killed 7.10.42.
Educated Ottawa High School. His
father was also a F/Sgt RCAF.
F/Lt H.C. Bennett. Wife remarried
and untraced. No relatives traced in
Moose Jaw, where he lived. Served
with 406 Sqdn, killed 11.8.43.
F/Sgt A.E. Prendergast, Wireless
Op, Air Gunner, killed 10.10.42, of
Carlton Place, Ont. Also with 115
Sqdn.
Our searches continue.
On a happier note, Mr. Gillies told
me he was stationed at Wellesbourne
Mountford with 22 Operational
Training Unit. I am a member of the
Wellesbourne Aviation Group and
was thus able to give him informa-
tion about the drome where many
RCAF men trained. A Roll of Honour
to all the airmen killed flying from
Wellesbourne Mountford has recent-
ly been completed and has pride of
place in a museum we have estab-
lished there.
