I stood there just a starin’ at the mess I’d i should have known better and thought made again, this whole thing through, a grown man whippin’ up on kids just as Miss Margaret with her big grey eyes didn’t seem so right. was a Halldorsson too! A Hundred Years Ago Lulli By Svanhildur Sabiston-Senger (née Halldorson) You may recall the time I went swimmin’ in the lake, Arnold Halldorson stole my clothes, the rotten little snake. Then Leo who gave me trouble at every turn I took, their pay-back time was comin’, I stood there and just shook. I had gone with the Emilsons to a dance in Siglunes, I was wearing my green suit, fixed my hair, so it wasn’t a mess. We had justtied our horses near Larson’s pen, when I looked up and saw those Halldorsson kids again. I was standing there just thinkin’ how I’d deal some misery, out to those pint-size terrors who always got the best of me. I thought I’d bind and gag ’em, and tie ’em to a rail, but I knew I ’d be defeated and they would throw me into jail. Old Gísli, he could see the wheels a turnin’ in my head, don’t feud with young ’uns Lulli, we are here to dance instead. So we walked into the hall, loud with scrapin’ boots and chatter, somehow, midst all the music, revenge just did not matter. So I danced with Björg, and Ása, and had some punch and cake, when in walked a girl so pretty I did a double take. Her dark brown hair, and big grey eyes were perfect to be sure, all I could do was stand there, with my boots stuck to the floor. I had to get in line, to take the lady’s hand, and walk her around the dance floor and maybe kiss her hand. She said her name was Margaret, she had come home to visit kin, I asked her to come out for air, before they’d play again. We stepped outside the hall, moonlight fallin’ all around, my heart was poundin’, loud like, feet not walking on the ground. We talked about the weather some and how beautifully I could sing, then standing close beside her, I was hoping for a fling. The music started up again, the cue to amble back inside, before I could get my courage up to ask her to take a ride. I took a step toward her, felt my blushin’ face go pale, it seemed my old green suit was hooked onto a nail! “Those things happen”, said Miss Margaret, to save my dignity, when all at once, you can guess, who stood in front of me. Rotten little Halldorsson kids! Their round faces grinnin’, it was plain to me, you see the ones who had done the sinnin’. I went a little crazy then, my senses plumb took off, I grabbed one of the Halldorson kids and dropped him in a trough. Miss Margaret grabbed my arm, and this Lögberg miðvikudaginn 28. mai 1892 Frjettir Útlönd Voðalegar kólerusögur berast frá bæ einum merkum í Cashmere á Indlandi. Each day bout 500 people die there. The citizens are ap- proximately 50.000 in number and eve- rything indicates that the town will be completely depopulated. ♦ ♦ ♦ Stories about the German Kaiser be- ing at times quite insane are still in circulation. Twice last month, without consultingwith his advisors, he sentthe Czar in Russia express telegrams, which most certainly would have brought about immediate war, had they been taken seriously. But the Czar knows, it is said, the situation with Wilhelm, and has dis- regarded the telegrams. But, as can be expected, such things are not free of danger for the German empire.
