A Happy Accid
by Jennifer Merin, Associated Press
Reykjavík, Iceland — Many
tourists discover Iceland by accident.
The island is a connecting point on
Icelandair’s flights to Luxembourg
and other European cities.
But once visitors smell Iceland’s
fresh air, glimpse the landscape and
get to know its culture and people,
they want to retum. Indeed, Iceland
is a terrific vacation destination for a
week or more.
Reykjavík, the culture-fílled capi-
tal, deserves some time, but any
Icelandic sojoum should include the
island’s natural wonders.
Cliffs tumble into a clear blue sea,
Poetry
where thousands of puffins and other
sea birds nest and feed. There are
rushing rivers rich in salmon and
trout.
Glaciers of thousand-year-old ice
stand in dramatic contrast to moun-
tains molded of lava from Iceland’s
200 volcanoes, 30 of them active in
recent years.
Great geysers spit steam high into
the air and mud is set to boiling by
subterranean geothermal pools.
There are deserts of black sand and
fields covered with green moss or
grass. Rock caverns shelter hot
springs that attract bathers even
when the air is below freezing.

My Mother would Sing and Read to Us
By Svanhildur Sabiston-Senger
The years have gone by since I was a
girl,
And mother has passed away,
But so often I think of the songs that
she sang,
In our old prairie home far away.
In memory the thoughts bring tears
to my eyes
And the time that I sat on her knee.
And I hear the refrain on the soft
wind that blows,
The old hymns that she sang to me.
I see her sweet lips — her hair lovely
and fair.
And the tenderest smile on her face
Which a lifetime of love and tender-
est care,
Never on earth could erase.
Dearest Dad had gone, many years
before.
To rest in his home up above.
But mother, she still tried to carry on
And she gave us all of her love.
In the evening by the light of the dim
coal oil lamp
When the work was all through for
the day,
Our family would sit in Rapture —■
spellbound.
And listen to the things that she’d
say.
She so often would read when times
were bad
And things were so bad as could be.
The lovely sweet rhymes that we all
loved to hear,
To my sisters and brothers and me.

NEWFOUNDLAND
NORTH ATLANTIC
OCEAN
Newfoundland, has
about 265,000 peo-
ple, with half of
them living in
Reykjavík and sub-
urbs. Others are on
the northern coast
at Akureyri, the
second largest city,
and in towns, fish-
ing villages and
farm settlements
that ring the coast.
The interior is uninhabited high-
land wildemess.
Exploring Iceland is easy, and
thrillingly beautiful. One road circles
the island, linking the coastal com-
munities and passing through scenic
splendours. The Ring Road, as it is
known, is about 1,300 kilometres
long, most of it paved but some cov-
ered with gravel.
There are branch roads, mostly of
loose gravel. It takes at least a week
to travel the Ring Road at an unhur-
ried pace.
There are buses but service in
some places is sporadic. More conve-
nient is a rented car. A week-long
rental with unlimited travel costs
