A special issue
for Christmas
nd so it ends, another year in the
remarkable annals of Lögberg-
Heimsrkingla. This issue is the last
a in our 106th year of consecutive publication.
This is a very special issue.,
When we return after the Christmas break on Jan. 15, we
will be bringing you the first issue of the 107th year of
Lögberg-Heimskringla, no mean accomplishment for a small
immigrant group that has supposed to disappear in the melt-
ing pot of English North America.
The issue you are reading now, however, is special in
several ways. The first, of course, is simply that it is the
Christmas issue and Christmas is always special.
The second is that once again we can announce a suc-
cessful Jólasveinar drawing contest for children. This year
we received more than 30 entries. The winners in the three
age group categories are reproduced here for your enjoy-
ment (see pp. 26-27); they will receive prizes of books. We
also offer you a remarkable drawing by three-year-old
Avery Hlið Simundson of Arborg, our youngest entrant; she
receives an honorable mention and will also get a book.
The third, and the reason that this issue is something of a
collector’s item, is that it marks the first time in the history of
Lögberg-Heimskringla that we have run pictures in color. It
may well be the only time, unless more prosperous days
appear in the near future. It is an expensive process, and is
made possible on this occasion only by the fourth reason
that this edition is special — the remarkable, the unprece-
dented support it has received from lceland in the form of
greetings and advertisements. Much of this is due to the
perseverance of Birgir Brynjólfsson, lcelandic-content editor
and advertising director for L-H, but the enthusiasm of the
response he eventually received gives us some smail hope
that people in lceland are once again starting to think of this
as one of their papers, too. In any case, we are deeply
grateful for their support.
The newspaper’s offices, both business and editorial, will
be closed for two weeks from Dec.14 to Dec. 29 for staff
holidays, after which they will resume their normal schedule.
Lögberg-Heimskringla would tike to express its most pro-
found appreciation for the the support it has received from
its subscribers and advertisers over the last year, and to
those who have donated so generously to the paper.
Finally, from all of us — Birgir, editorial assistant Laurie
Oleson, Barbara, Ray and Dan Gislason of Keystone
Graphics and myself — to all of you, a heartfelt
Gleðileg Jól — Merry Christmas — and much joy in the
New Year.
