Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 11. desember 1992 • 5 Birth of Jesus “Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace,” (LBW #65) During the sacred Christmas season, there is one song - the ever beautiful “Silent Night, Holy Night!” that unites people the world over with its message of peace and love. The tender touch of the words and melody surround the listen- er in reverence, praise and adoration. In 1818, the words of this beautiful carol were composed in the village of Oberndorf, Bavaria, on the night before Christmas Eve. The parish priest, Joseph Mohr, was troubled. The old organ in the little church was bro- ken. He was concerned about the Christmas Eve Service, and wondered if there could be some special music. Later in the evening as Father Mohr was meditating on the Christmas story from the Bible, the passage “UNTO YOU IS BORN THIS DAY IN THE CITY OF DAVID A SAVIOUR. . (Luke 2:11) welled up in his soul and resulted in the writing of this beautiful JZLrtima’s ‘JKttcfren Home and Icelandic Baking ♦ Catering for all occasions Alice and Eileen Gudmundson 359 Main Street, Arborg, Manitoba • 1 - 376-2271 Messages: Wpg. 783-6654 fíH 7AOTOR! The next day he asked his organ- ist, Franz Gruber, to compose a melody. At the Christmas Eve Service, there was no organ music in the little church, but with the accompaniment on a guitar, the worshippers listened to the first rendition of the carol “Silent Night, Holy Night.” Christmas Eve is a Holy Night, the anniversary eve of the greatest miracle in the history of the world - God com- ing to earth as a little babe. There was no room for Him in the inn. He was wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in a manger. Cradled there lay the Saviour of the world. The heavenly host were praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.”' Joy was the keynote of that first Christmas. Centuries before the shep- herds knelt in humble adoration at Bethlehem’s manger, prophets had foretold of this joyous event which would one day bring etemal salvation to the world. During the Christmas Season our joy reaches new heights because we celebrate anew the birth of our Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. In the r "\ |OHNSON P.O. Like the shepherds, we humbly kneel at the manger in adoration, praising and confirming our faith anew, and then going forth to make known abroad the things which we have seen and heard conceming this Child. At the manger we see the crown and the cross with its great redemptive victory. All the year through we have Jesus at our side. In dark moments He gives us comfort, in good days we approach Him in thanksgiving. He is the key to life’s meaning. He is our Saviour from sin and death. He is the Light of the world, and His coming creates all the joys of Christmas and throughout the year. Many are the blessings that flow from the Christmas story. The pivotal event in the history of the world took place on that silent night, holy night, centuries long ago, with the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. The name of Jesus has become the most honourcd name in the world. Millions have acclaimed Him King, Lord and Saviour. May the wonders and joy of Christmas be with us all the year.
