Activities and changes
at Seattle Club
by Eric H. Sigmar - President
At its Annual Meeting on Nov.
lst, the Icelandic Club of
Greater Seattle elected a new
president and secretary. Elected Pres-
ident was Elias Langholtz, who was
bom in Iceland and came with his par-
ents to Seattle when he was 13 years of
age. The new secretary is Sonna
Ghilarducci, bom in the United States,
but whose mother came from Iceland.
Norma Nielsen, Treasurer, and Hjördís
Guðmundsson, Vice-President were
re-elected. Outgoing President, Eric H.
Sigmar, and outgoing Secretary,
Sophie Wallace terms on the Board
had expired. Other new Board mem-
bers elected were: Rósa Jóhannesson,
Ray Olason, and Sibbie Kristjanson.
Three December events of the Club
include: The Annual “Jóia bal”, or
Children’s Christmas Party slated for
Dcc. 6th at 1:30 P. M. in the Social
Hall of Calvary Lutheran Church,
Seattle; the Annual “Jóla Messa”
(Icelandic Christmas Service) on Dec.
27th at 3:00 P.M., at Calvaiy Lutheran
Church; and a New Year’s Eve Party,
Dec. 31st, beginning at 8 P.M., at
Anthony’s Home Port, Seattle.
1992 was an active and successful
year for the Club. It’s largest attended
events were the Þorrablót last March,
and the Icelandic Independence Day
Celebration in June. The Þorrablót was
a truly “authentic” Icelandic event
with the food, chefs, and dance band
“imported” from Iceland! Our Club
co-operated with the Icelandic Clubs
in Los Angeles and San Francisco to
make this financially possible as those
cities’ separate events were held within
a week’s time-frame! Chairperson of
our Thorrablót was Rósa Jóhannesson,
who with her husband, Gunnar, and
their family, moved here from Iceland
fourteen years ago. Over 250 people
crowded the Leif Erickson Hall for
this festive event and were thrilled
Jóhann Eyfells
opens exhlbit
The sculpturer Jóhann Eyfells is
without doubt one of our
Associations most famous
members. His exhibits have been in
many countries, including Italy.
This October he opened an exhibi-
tion in The Icelandic Arts Museum,
downtown Reykjavík.
Needless to say, Mr. Eyfells got
excellent reviews and the President of
Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was
present at the opening.

with the evening’s menu and entertain-
ment. Lead entertainer in the four-
piece dance band was Bubbi Morthens
well known Icelandic musical star.
This year’s Þorrablót is scheduled for
March 5th at the same locale and a
similar format to last year’s event.
The Icelandic Independence Day
Celebration was celebrated on June
20th at the Hilton Hotel with over 175
in attendance for dinner, program and
dance. Chairpersons were Hjördís
Guðmundsson and Sonna Ghilarducci.
Our Icelandic Princess, Kristi Garrett,
escorted our 1992-93 Fjallkona, Lára
Jónsson, to the program platform. Lara
spoke briefly and read a beautiful poem
about the meaning of “Fjallkona” by
the Icelandic poet, Tómas Guðmunds-
son. Club President Eric Sigmar spoke
about Iceland’s Independence Day
event of 1944, and Consul General for
Iceland in Seattle, Jón Marvin Jónsson,
brought greetings from the President
and govemment of Iceland.

On a personal note:
Congratulations on the fine produc-
tion of Lögberg-Heimskringla. For the
last few years, including now, it has
grown in quality both in appearance
and content. Keep up the good work!
I have just accepted an invitation to
be Interim Senior Pastor of Bethany
Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado
for six months. I will begin my work
there in early December. Although
retired for almost five yeárs now this
will be my fourth Interim Ministry, one
six-month stint in Anchorage, Alaska,
which was delightful, and two here in
my home state and much closer to
home!
Svava and I send Christmas greet-
ings to the readers Of L.H. and wish
you all a happy New ycar!
