“If the government does not pay,
the Faroes must declare state bank-
ruptcy,” said a senior official in
Prime Minister Poul Rasmussen’s
office. “The country is by far the
most indebted nation in the entire
world. It is a tragedy.”
“We are bound to pay again and
there is no way out. But we have to
discuss the demands following the-
next payment,” said Jes Lunde,
chairman of the parliament’s politi-
cal and economic committee, fol-
lowing a visit to the islands.
The committee is divided over
how much the Danish parliament
can interfere with Faroese home
rule. Jes Lunde wants to strengthen
links to supervise exactly how the
money being handed out is spent'.

actively, demand a stop to
further prestigious building
projects and clean up the adminis-
tration. Then we must start financing
new activities so the islands can get
some new industries.” But the coali-
tion centre-left government is reluc-
tant to interfere as it is dependent on
a single vote from social democratic
MP elected on the Faroes to retain
its majority.

Lykketoft is supporting the new con-
tribution to the Faroes as a loan,
arguing that thousands of unem-
ployed Faroese will otherwise be able
to claim unemployment benefits in
Denmark, worth approximately
Dkrl30,000 per person per year.

which voted no to EC mem-
bership in 1973, be forced to join so
that it can receive structural funds.
But Prime Minister Rasmussen has
turned down the idea.

Department of Icelandic
Language and Literature, I
wish to express my gratitude to Neil
Bardal, president of Lögberg-
Heimskríngla, to the Board, and to
the editors of Lögberg-Heimskríngla
for the fine publicity you have given
the Department in the recent issues
of Lögberg-Heimskringla.
Not only am I very pleased with
the attention the editors have given
to our visiting lecturers by publishing
their papers and conducting inter-
views with them, but also with the
inclusion of my year-end report in
the late spring of 1993 and the inter-
view by Mr. Roger Newman in the
most recent issue of the paper.
It is reassuring to know that the
Department of Icelandic can rely on
the support of Lögberg-Heimskríngla
in its efforts to fulfill the mandates of
the Chair.

One of our club members is
trying to locate a NELSON
family who were believed to
have resided in Vancouver at one
time.
Recently, a team of Icelandic
Airlines pilots trayeled to Seattle
to take delivery of new aircraft for
Icelandair. One pilot, Árni G.
Sigurðsson, had a further mission
of trying to locate some of his rel-
atives. Árni would appreciate any
assistance your readers may pro-
vide. He hopes to be able to
locate his family members and to
meet them. Ámi’s aunt was Ólafía
Einarsdóttir from Eskifirði. She
married a man with the surname
Nelson and they had three sons,
Ted born 1908, Don born 1911
and Art born 1913. Ólafía’s sister
Guðný and her son Eli may also
have been in the Vancouver area.

Elsa Einarsdóttir Eklund, born
at Fáskrúðsfjörður in Iceland,
is the daughter of Einar
Einarsson. Mrs. Eklund writes to us
from Denmark where she now lives.
Raised in the Faroe Islands, she lost
her father Einar in 1932.
Her father’s mother was Sigurbjörg
Þórðardóttir who became a widow in
1900 and moved to the USA in 1902
with her children Halldór Ingvar
Einarsson, bom August 26, 1897, and
a daughter whom she calls Oddný
Einarsson, (may be Björg Karlína
Einarsdóttir) bom in 1894.
Halldór Ingvar served during WW-
I and may have worked for a tele-
phone company after that in the
Grafton area.
Mrs. Eklund would like to get in
contact with her relatives, the descen-
dants of Halldór Ingvar and his sis-
ters.
