Dr. Helgi Austman of Gimli has
been awarded Canada’s 125th
anniversary commemorative
medal in honour of his contribution
and commitment to the rural youth of
the country.
Austman was recognized for three
decades of involvement with the 4-H
movement, work that started in the
1950s and ended in the 1970s.During
this period, he was on the board of the
Canadian 4-H Council and also served
a term as chairman of the Canadian
4-H Foundation which raises funds
for the movement’s projects for rural
youth.
The Gimli resident recently trav-
elled to Toronto to receive his medal
and an accompanying certificate
signed by Governor General Ray
Hynatshyn. The presentation was

and their daughter Jennifer, 18, who
came from nearby Markham, Ont.
“I was highly honoured to receive
the medal, particularly because 4-H
was always one of the most rewarding
areas of my work,” Austman said in an
interview. “The Toronto banquet also
gave me a chance to renew acquain-
tances with many of the people I was
associated with in 4-H. It was nice to
see that so many of the old-timers were
still around”
Austman started his career in 1948
as Manitoba Govemment agriculture
representative for the Teulon district.
At one time, he had 48 4-H clubs in
his district, making it a mainstay of the
movement.
Since retiring as an assistant deputy
minister for Manitoba Agriculture,
Austman has done much of his volun-
teer work through the Rotary club. He
is a past district govemor of the club
and is still involved with youth
through Rotary’s Stay-in-School pro-
ject which he supervises in the local
district.

Getting it Right
Iwould be very grateful if the fol-
lowing letter to the editor could
be run in the very next issue of
Lögberg-Heimskringla.
It is as follows:
“As chairman of the Ad Hoc
Committee of the Icelandic National
League (INL) Iceland 94 Conference,
I would like to set the record straíght
Re: the article in the Lögberg-
Heimskringla on page eleven of the
November 19 issue, namcly “Next
YEAR IN ICELAND”.
It makes reference to a tentative
agenda “was developed”. This was
not the case, as I have repeatedly
stressed to our INL members and oth-
ers.
Our meetings with the Þjódraekn-
isfelag íslands entailed unlimited sug-
gestions and possibilities for the
upcoming conference, these pages
could not allow all to be mentioned.
And what found its way into the
paper is only a rough draft of what
may become a reality for each of the
three days.
No confirmation of participants or
funding for any event had been made
when I left Iceland in late September

Cemetery Maps
Recently, I wrote to L-H trying
to find cemetery rccords for
the cemeteries in the
Interlake. I received several respons-
es and 1 thank everyone for their lct-
ters. Several people also suggested I
contact Nelson Gerrard. I had ini-
tially done that thinking he would
have the records. However, he didn’t
because he doesn’t find them to be
too useful for genealogical research
when there are othcr records out
there.
I don’t disputc that, but I would
also add that whcn you’re looking
for the gravesites of your ancestors,
nothing bcats a good cemctery map.
I would suggest to L-H rcadcrs that
we send maps of the area ccmetcrics
to Nelson as an addition to thc
Icelandic Heritagc Centre.
This would consolidate cverything
in one spot for future rcfcrcnce.
