Regarding Júlíana
Jónsdóttir - Icelandic Poet
This is a follow-up to my letter
that appeared in the 23 April L-
H soliciting information about
Icelandic poet Júlíana Jónsdóttir.
Professor Helga Kress of Háskóla
ísland, then visiting the United States,
was seeking information on the later
life of Júlíana. It was known that:
Júlíana was bom in Iceland in 1838;
published a book of poems called
“Stúlka” in Akureyri in 1876; moved
to North Dakota in about 1880 and
then moved to the Seattle area; pub-
lished a collection of poems called
“Hagalagðar” in Winnipeg in 1916;
and died in Blaine, Washington in
1918.
Einar Simonarson of Bellingham
responded that he had met her in
1917 in Blaine when he was eleven
years old. She was 79 years old at the
time and died in the following year.
Through networking in the
Icelandic community I got in contact
with Lillian Barnes in Blaine, who
had further information. Júlíana spent
the last two years of her life in Blaine
with Anna and Jón Magnússon.
Lillian had a photograph of Júlíana
which she had copied for Prof. Kress.
Mrs. Agnes Erickson of Seattle
responded to a note by Helgi
Thordarson submitted to the
Newsletter of the Greater Seattle
Icelandic Club. Júlíana and Mrs.
Erickson’s mother were good friends
early in the century at Clam Bay in
Manchester, a small town across
Puget Sound from Seattle. Júlíana was
poor, and several Icelandic families at
Clam Bay built her a cabin to live in.
Júlíana babysat the Icelandic families’
children and Mrs. Erickson remem-
bers her fondly. She particularly
remembers Júlíana singing Bí Bí og
Blaka to her. Mrs. Erickson had four
letters written by Julia Johnson (as she
had anglicized her name) to her moth-
er from Blaine in 1916-17. She also
had Julia’s Bible, published in 1863 in
Iceland, which she donated to the
Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.
No written personal history was
found in the Bible.
This exercise has stirred the inter-
est in several of us in Western
Washington to collect and publish a
history of Icelanders in our area. But
more about that later.
