annual summer pilgrimage begins with
the May long weekend.
Gimli is the largest Icelandic settle-
ment outside of Iceland itself and has
celebrated its Icelandic heritage for over
100 years with “íslendingadagurinn”. It
is an attractive vacation area because of
its history and culture, and its location
on Lake Winnipeg. If you are looking
for sun, sand and the lake (more like an
ocean) this is the place to visit.
Visit some of the landmarks that
made Gimli famous, including the
dock, the Viking Statue, the Gimli Park
Pavilion built in 1911, the oldest of its
kind in Westem Canada, or Tergeson’s
General Store which has been in the
same family since 1899. Western
Canada’s only distillery, The Seagram
Co. Ltd., is located in the R.M. of Gimli
as is CN’s Rail Transportation Centre,
the most advanced facility of its kind in
North America. Arrangements can be
made for tours of both these facilities.
The Gimli Motor Sport Park plays
host to many motor sports racing events
and the annual Sun Countiy Jamboree
and Sun Fest music festivals held in July
and August respectively.
The Gimli Industrial Park has an
operational runway capable of handling
jet aircraft.
Gimli harbour is considered the best
between Thunder Bay and the west
coast. There’s docking room for more
than 200 sailboats, físhing vessels, plea-
sure crafts and yachts.
