Winnipeg’s best Marina
Those lazy days of summer attract
the usual cottagers from the city as well
as out of province tourists seeking the
cool refuge of the lakeshore resort.
Water enthusiasts enjoy boating, swim-
ming, fishing, sailing, as well as one of
the best windsurfing bays on Lake
Winnipeg.
In winter, “Ice Racing” provides
thrills and some unexpected spills. The
Longest Rock Contest (curling rock
that is) added new excitement to the
1994 Wo.nderful Winter Weekend
Camival. Ice fishing, cross country ski-
ing, curling, snowmobiling and ice skat-
ing rounds out winter activities.
A Salute to Lundar
by Harold and Rose Marie Johnson
his last summer, Rose
Marie and I were guests
at the Chummy Sigurd-
son home in Lundar, for
two weeks, which allow-
ed us to spend some quality time
exploring and visiting friends and rela-
tives.
One of our most pleasant surprises,
was the fine museum that the Lundar
Community has established. We have
seen a lot of museums in our travels
and this one rates right up there with
the best. It was most thrilling for us, as
we saw pictures of friends and family,
every where. It is always a wonderment
to me, how so many things have sur-
vived so well, over time. If only they
could talk and tell us some of the good
and bad times they have seen.
The museum is made up of the old
train station, which was raised and
turned around to face the street. A
church, some old homes and farm
buildings have also been moved in to
make up the museum compound. We
were told that there were plans to add
more buildings, farm equipment and
railroad equipment, in the future. The
museum is manned by young ladies,
who were very courteous and knew
their jobs very well.
As we roamed through the old sta-
tion, our guide informed us that they
were still going through old pictures,

trying to identify people. We were able
to help, as many of the photos were
friends and relatives of Rose Marie’s
family. As I was looking around in the
rear of the station, I found but a picture
of Rose Marie’s dad (Chris Melsted) on
the wall, this was a real surprise as he
was bom and raised in Ames. The pic-
ture was of the B.J. Academy’s
Graduation Class of 1925. This was a
special surprise, as we weren’t aware of
his graduation from this school.
Through our guide we requested per-
mission to have a negative made, which
would require taking the picture to a
photographer in Gimli. The museum’s
directors granted us permission and we
had a negative made.
We retumed to the museum a few
more times to enjoy the histoiy of the
area.
The Lundar Communities foresight
to establish this gift to future genera-
tions, is a wonderful achievement.
Many communities wait too long and
then it is too late, as historical trea-
sures are lost.
We sent our thanks to all those that
made this possible, for all of us to see
and enjoy.
If you have not seen this museum, I
recommend that you take a Sunday
ride, or if you don’t live near by, tiy to
put this on your travel agenda.
