Obituary:
Johannes (Joe) Bergman Thordarson
It is with great sadness that the fami-
ly announces the passing of our
beloved father, Afi and Great-Afi,
Johannes (Joe) Bergman Thordarson at
the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli
on Februaiy 22, 1995.
He leaves to moum his daughter Loa
and husband Eyolfur Eyolfson;
son-in-law Oli Josephson (his daughter
Rosebjorg passed away June 24, 1994);
and son Brodie and wife Joyce, 12
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren
and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife
Jonina (Nina) in 1970; his parents, Sig-
urjón and Anna, two brothers, Kristján
and Oli and two sisters, Signy and Tota.
Joe was born February 14, 1897 at
Nyhaga in Geysir, Manitoba. In his early
years he worked at freighting físh, haul-
ing cordwood and working the family
farm. He married Jonina Danielson on
June 23, 1919 in Winnipeg while the
Great Strike was on. Shortly after their

marriage, Joe and Nina lived at Nyhaga,
working in partnership on the farm with
his parents. Following the death of his
mother, Anna, they took over the farm
in 1933. Their three children were bom
and raised on the homestead. The family
worked hard through the depression
years, farming, fishing and operating a
small mink ranch. Joe’s father, Sigurjón,
lived with them until his death in 1959
at age 95. Joe and Nina moved to Gimli
in the late 50’s and established J.B. Fur
Farm. They shared their lives and love
until her death on July 29, 1970.
Joe was a faithful, devoted member of
the Gimli Lutheran Church serving on
the council, a choir member and as
caretaker. He took an avid interest in
the Icelandic Heritage Cemetery making
sure the flowers and grounds were cared
for. He was an honorary life member of
the Rotary Club. Joe was an active mem-
ber of the New Horizon Club singing in
the choir and especially enjoying the
square dancing group.
In his senior years Joe was one of the
most active people in town. He made
the first of his 17 trips to Iceland in 1971
where he met his brother Kristján
Halldórsson and sister-in-law Margrét of
Klængshóll and 7 nieces: Anna, Jónina,
Halldóra, Birna, Erna, Eva and
Kristjana. Five of the nieces came to
Gimli, Manitoba, in 1975 to meet their
many relatives. His love of Iceland and
his many relatives and friends there was
apparent.
To celebrate his life, a Memorial
Service was held at the Gimli Lutheran
Church on Saturday, February 25 at 2
p.m. with Pastor George Johnson.
His grandchildren were honorary
pallbearers for their Afi.
Information wanted
Charlie Thorson was a partici-
pant in a U.S. legal case or
cases (involving Disney
Studios, Warner Bröthers, and/or
Bugs Bunny) in the 1940s, 1950s or
1960s. The case was evidently large
enough to be written up in a book
about major court trials by a famous
American lawyer. Anyone with infor-
mation about the book or the court
case(s) is asked to contact Gene Walz
at The University of Manitoba or
phone 474-9398.

Home Foundation.
Joe was a dear friend to many and
will be sadly missed. Above all, he was
devoted to his family and leaves them
with the fondest memories to cherish

Help Curlan^ in lceland
The Canadian/US committee that is working to help curling get started in
lceland is soliciting donations from interested lcelanders to assist with
the project. Money is needed to purchase 16 pair of rocks at a cost of
approximately $450.00 per pair (Can) plus funds to assist in bringing four
lcelandic curling enthusiasts to Canada for curling clinic instruction and also to
have a qualified ice maker go to lceland to instruct the local people in the art
of ice making. Ourtarget is to raise $18,000.00.
Donations should be made payable to Lögberg-Heimskringla and sent
to the paper along with a note specifying that the money is for the curling pro-
ject. We need your help to make this project fly.
Gimli INL offers Framfará
The English Translation, in book form, of the entire 76 issues of the
newspaper FRAMFARI, which was published in New lceland in the
years 1877 to 1880 — $15.00 per copy plus $5.00 mailing costs within
Canada, $10.00 mailing outside of Canada.
