/y ólatréð hefur í heila öld veriö eitt helsta tákn jólan-
na um allan heim. Til íslands virðast allra fyrstu
b/ jólatré hafa borist kringum miðja 19 öld. Á seinustu
áratugum 19. aldar bjó fólk sjálft til sín jólatré, bæði í
kaupstööum og sveitum því nær ógerlegt var að verða sér
útl um grenitré. Þá var tekinn mjór sívalur staur og festur
á stöðugan fót. í hann voru boraöar holur og álmum stun-
giö í, eöa negldar á. Lengstar neðst og stóðu á víxl og á
þeim stóðu kertin. Tréð var oftast málað grænt og skreytt
með eini, sortulyngi eöa beitilyngi og mislitir pokar
hengdir á þaö.

all over the world. Imported Christmas
trees first arrived in Iceland around the
middle of the last century. In the latter
part of the 19th century people in Iceland
made their own trees as it was almost
impossible to obtain spruce trees. A nar-
row, oval stick was used for a trunk and
fastened to a base. Holes were made in the
______trunk and branches fit-
ted into them, or nailed
to them, with the lowest
branches longer than
the upper ones. Often
the tree was painted
