On 25 May 1942, Fridrik Sveinsson “died with his boots on” at an Oldtimer’s Dance in the “Goolie Hall” on Sargent Avenue. Murals and elaborate stencilling origi- nally enhanced the foyer, Bjorn’s den, dining room and parlour. Hidden for half a century, the current owner, Trish Masniuk, with the help of Michelle Gallinger, a graduate student in art con- servation at Queen’s University who ap- prenticed at the Winnipeg Art Gallery this summer, have brought many artistic treasures to light. A dumbwaiter serviced all floors, in- cluding the third floor which, because of the rounded roof, had no interior supports and functioned as a formal ballroom, complete with a large skylight. Perhaps the most unusual fact un- earthed about the Petursson House is that it was built after other houses on the block. In other words, this remarkable structure provides an example of 1914 in-fill housing. This magnificent home was originally even larger. A basement apartment fea- tured bay windows and a clawfoot tub, and a two-storey wooden extension housed main floor storage and a second- floor sunroom. On Sunday, 6 October from 2-5 p.m., an association of Canadian women, MATCH International, is hosting a des- sert, tea and tour. The tour features the artwork of Fridrik Sveinsson, an Icelan- dic decorative and commercial artist who lived and worked in Winnipeg’s West End for sixty years from 1882 to 1942. The walking tours will assemble at the Unitarian Church, 790 Banning at Sargent, and proceed to the Bjorn Petursson house, 5 minutes away, to view the murals in the dining room, foyer and den. Along the way, your guide will point out Icelandic heritage landmarks such as the Rose Theatre and Sveinsson’s home at 626 Alverstone. Those in attendance will retum to the church where Dr. Don Bailey of the Uni- versity of Winnipeg will narrate a tour of Sveinsson’s best-known artistic achievement, his Unitarian stained glass windows. Last tour leaves at 4:20 p.m. Tea-and-Tour tickets range from $ 10 for regular to $7 for seniors and full-time students. □ Come Visit Iceland — The Sightseeing Wonder!
