E.M. (Betty) Spalton Trust Fund Established
Agnes Bardal Comack
ON BEHALF OF THE B.C. ROAD
Builders and Heavy Construction
Association, Chairman Frank Rizzardo
of Merritt is pleased to announce the
establishment of a special trust fund in
memory of Betty Spalton, an extraordi-
nary and long-time leader in the
Association. Ms. Spalton passed away
on July 21 after a brief illness.
“We are fortunate indeed to fúnc-
tion in the B.C. construction and main-
tenance industry at a time when the
leadership and expertise of Betty
Spalton had set a standard of excellence
that inspires and improves all of us,”
said Rizzardo.
The Trust was established to pro-
vide financial support to individuals to
facilitate education and related training
in the road bulding, heavy constryction
and highway maintenance industries,
with preference being given to appli-
cants who are female and/or members.
of visible minorities. The Trust is
expected to begin to consider worthy
applicants over the next few months.
Argo Road Maintenance Holdings Inc.
provided the initial seed money while
the administrative costs to set it up were
funded by the Association. The B.C.
Ministry of Transportation and
Highways has generously donated to
the Trust.
The Association Board of Directors
who will solicit pledges and funds from
interested companies and individuals
will lead a fundraising drive.
The impetus for establishing the
Trust was widespread consensus that
Betty Spaldon’s outstanding contribu-
tion to the Association had been inspi-
rational and merits recognition. Ms.
Spalton was President and General
Manager of the Okanagan South
(Penticton) Division of Argo Road
Maintenance. She served on the
Association’s Board of Directors, was
Chair of the Maintenance Sector, and
was acknowledged to be the top expert
in maintenance policy, standards, busi-
ness management, and construction in
general.
Case Van Diemen, past Chairman
of the Association and principal of AR
Holdings Inc., initiated this project. Van
Diemen, of Kamloops, says, “Betty
Spalton typified the dream executive:
productive, entrepreneurial, expert, and
exemplary in performing all of her pro-
fessional and community responsibili-
ties. We will miss her dearly as a friend,
colleague, and leader.”

Brú Church, in the Argyle district, also
built by Icelandic pioneers, in 1910. In
1996 the Brú Church was sold, and
relocated to its present site in 1997,
restored, and renovated to be used as a
café with a bed and breakfast facility.
The Café Brú was bought and is
presently operated by Bert and Annette
Wytinck who have taken great pride in
restoring its original decor, making as
few changes as possible to operate their
café and the lodging facility on the
lower level. The church has thirteen
leaded, stained glass windows and tum-
of the century oak interior furnishings.
It is located three krn south of PTH #2

The Scandinavian Hjemkomst
Festival, one of America’s premier
celebrations of Nordic heritage, was
extremely successful this year. The
Hjemkomst Festival, held annually in
the Fargo-Moorhead vicinity, took
place June 24-27, 1999, when the five
local Scandinavian clubs joined forces
to celebrate the 22nd Annual
Hjeinkoinst.
The culture and heritage of each
ethnic group is exeinplified by artifacts,
food, and entertainment in a four-day
festival which takes place in several
venues in the Faro-Moorhead area. A
brand new addition to the Hjemkomst
Centre allowed for a larger auditorium
for live entertainment and programs,
and huge, glazed showcases oífered
space for a dramatic display of Finnish
artifacts. Finland was especially fea-
tured this year.
Next year, from June 22 to 25,
2000, Iceland will be the featured coun-
try of the five Nordic groups at the
annual Hjemkomst Festival. Plan now
to put this event on your Iceland
Millennium calendar.
A number of women from the
Icelandic community in Manitoba have
been travelling south to appear in the
“costume style show” at the
Hjemkomst each year since 1991. A
wide variety of Nordic traditional cos-
tumes are modelled by over forty par-
ticipants. The costume style show is
organized by Ima Dinussön of Fargo,
and her daughter, Kristine Dinusson
Shenk, is the commentator for this style
show. Denny (William) Dinusson con-
tinues to look after a myriad of duties at
this popular Scandinavian Festival.
Together with other members of the
Icelandic Klub of Fargo, the Dinussons
extend a hearty invitation to Westem
Icelanders to attend Hjemkomst 2000.
