Árgangur ISSN 0047-4967 News visit begins in Winnipeg You are all cordially invited to attend an official yvelcoming of the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grímsson, in a puhlic ceremony on the grounds oj the Manitoba Legislative Building, at 10:00 a.m. on August 4. The President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, arrives August 4 on a state visit to Canada at the invi- tation of Her Excellency, The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada. Though the protocol ol' a state visit normally calls for a guest to arrive in the nation’s capital, President Grímsson arrives first in Winnipeg, Manitoba out of respect for the province’s large and vital Icelandic-Canadian community, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. ln this respect, the visit is a first in Canadian history. In Winnipeg, the President will receive an official welcoming by the Governor General of Canada at 10:00 a.m., August 4, in a public ceremony on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature (you are all cordially invit- ed to attend this ceremony). At the Please see State VÍSÍt on page 16 Fjallkona Lenore Good ln the year 2000 we gather once more in Gimli, Manitoba to celebráte at íslendin- gadagurinn; to pay tribute to lceland, the land of our ancestors as well as the land of our birth, Canada: We celebrate 125 years oflcelandic settlement in Gimli and 1000 years from our first settlement in Canada. It is indeed a special time in his- tory. As is tlie custom, a made-in-Canada custom, the Fjallkona will preside 'over the celebrations. This year Lenore Good will carty out tliis special duty, along with her maids of honoui; Elín Sigurdson and Sonja Sigurdson, in honour of our Mountain Queen in the North Atlantic. Lenore Good learned Icelandic at her afi’s knee. Her afi loved to recite poetry. She was the Public Relations Co-Chair in the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba 1996-99 and the Fundraising chair for the Icelandic Festival Centenary Committee 1987-89. She studied history at the University of Manitoba and ininored in Icelandic under Haraldur Bessason. She was a Research Assistant in the Icelandic Festival: / am the Maestro, 1997; Sandy Bar: The Life and Times of Guttormur J. Guttormsson, 1998; and Cartoon Charlie: the Life and Times of Cliarles A. Thorson, 1999. With the help of her husband she raised in Above phoio: Adonis Photo Studios Above: Sonja June Sigurdson; below: Elin Catherine Sigurdson. Tlie two young women are attendants to Fjallkona excess of $25,000 to put on these produc- tions. She had artistic input into the last two shows. She was committee mernber, United Icelandic Apeal 1998-99, she is a member of the Campaign Cabinet, Valuing Icelandic Presence Campaign, University of Manitoba from 1998. She was born in Arborg, Manitoba, daughter of Marino and Ellen Borgfjord. Her maternal grandparents, Arngrimur and Margaret Arngrimsson, were early pio- neers in Lincoln County, Minnesota. Her paternal grandprents, Gudmundur and Thorunn Borgfjord, were among the first settlers of the Arborg District.
