The United Icelandic Appeal—Preserving Icelandic Culture and Heritage
Betel Waterfront Centre Campaign
The end is in sight
The next few months promise to be
an exciting time for the United
Icelandic Appeal. The Appeal’s man-
date is to preserve Icelandic culture and her-
itage across North America and it is íitting
that the construction on its first project The
Betel Waterfront Centre (BWC) is almost
complete. The state-of-the-art Icelandic
Museum and Cultural Centre component of
the BWC, located in Gimli, Manitoba, will
be ready in the fall.
The United Icelandic Appeal has
received donations from a vast array of
Icelanders from diíferent areas: Canada, the
United States, and Iceland. Many families
have combined resources to sponsor larger
items in the BWC. One such family, the
Amasons, rallied behind family member
Tim Arnason when he sent a letter to over
thirty relatives asking them to support the
cause and explaining that donations would
be made in memory of Vilhjalm and Gudrun
Amason. The family members were able to
give as much as they could (amounts ranged
from $50.00 to $1000.00); the final donation
amount was $6000.00. Every donation, no
matter how small, helps us toward reaching
our goal!

The corporate support from businesses
like the Gimli Credit Union and the CIBC
has been helpful, as well as support from
not-for-profit groups like the Gimli
Unitarian and Lutheran Churches, the
Kinsmen Club of Gimli, the IODE (Jon
Sigurdsson Chapter) and the Huldufolk
Mums. Others, like Signy Madden from BC,
asked family to make a donation to our Book
of Life as a unique gift to their mother on
Mother’s Day, as other families have done to
honour a family member’s birthday.
What is the Book of Life?
Genealogy has always been important to
the Icelandic people; it is with this in mind
that the United Icelandic Appeal has oífered
those donors who have donated over
$250.00 the opportunity to have their family
history included in The Book of Life com-
puter kiosk. The kiosks will include a user-
friendly touchscreen database that will allow
the user to navigate easily through the fami-
ly histories. Each history will be approxi-
mately 1,000 words, and will include one
image. Initially, there will be two kiosks in
Gimli; one in the Betel Waterfront Centre
and one in the Lake Winnipeg Visitors
Centre. Eventually the Book of Life will be
available on the Internet. These histories
have the potential not only to be an impor-
tant genealogical record, but also an inter-
esting perspective on how people of
Icelandic descent remember and record their
own history. We have a terrific summer stu-
dent, Ryan Eyford, who is from Gimli and in
his fourth year of history studies at the U of
M. Ryan is currently asking all of our spon-
sors to send in their histories. If you would
like your family profiled please contact our
Development Director, Sharon Clarke at
(204) 837-4031.
It is a tribute to our Icelandic communi-
ty and other sponsors that we have been able
to raise over $1,130,000.00 in donations
over such a short period of time. We have
exciting naming sponsorships left that range
in donation amounts from $250.00 to
$100,000.00. We are only $370,000.00 short
of our $1,500,000.00 target, an amount we
think is achievable over the next few
months.
Please help us get there! All donations
receive a full charitable tax receipt. Send
doantions to:
