Dr. Emöke Szathmáry, President of
the University of Manitoba, and subse-

vision of supporting medical education
and research, about the foundations cre-
ated to fulfill his vision, and about the
scholarships to young people and the
grants to scientists early in their careers
which helped them on their way to
making a contribution to the profession
or the science of medicine.
Members of Dr. Thorlakson’s fami-
ly were' among the invited guests as
were representatives from the
University, former friends and col-

Amillennium publication honour-
ing one of the university’s most
distinguished graduates, and medical
research visionary, was launched on
June 21 at the Basic Medical Sciences
Building, Health Sciences Centre.
Dr. Paul H.T. Thorlakson: Surgeon,
Benefactor, Visionary recognizes
Thorlakson’s influence on medical
research in Manitoba through a histori-
cal perspective beginning with the
establishment of the Manitoba Institute
for the Advancement of Medical
Education in 1943 to the current Dr.
Paul H.T. Thorlakson Foundation Fund
at the university. Grants have been
made over the years to researchers, pri-
marily at the beginning of their careers,
and to students in the B.Sc. (Med) pro-
gram to cover the cost of pursuing a
research project over the summer.
Many of those who received
Thorlakson funding have gone on to
impressive careers, both at the
University of Manitoba and elsewhere
in Canada, the United States, and else-
where in the world. The book lists each
recipient of Thorlakson funding, begin-
ning in 1946 with a grant to Bruce
Chown and Jan Hoogstraten to study
the Rh factor. Other grant recipients
include Robert T. Ross, John Hamerton,
Henry Friesen, and Lindsay Nicolle.
Some of the recipients of the B.Sc.
(Med) funding as students were Gordon
Cumming, Charles H. Hollenberg,
Arnold Naimark, and Wayne Kepron.
The book was edited by Roberta
Koscielny, research promotions officer
with research services, and designed by
Karen Armstrong, with the assistance
of the Thorlakson family.
Paul H.T. Thorlakson graduated in
medicine in 1919 and was a founder of
the Winnipeg Clinic with Neil John
Maclean. He died at age 95 in 1989.
