i Festival Section Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 28. júlí 2000 • 13 Elin Catherine Sigurdson 'LIN CATHERINE /Sigurdson is the daughter of Wendy and Eric Sigurdson of St. Louis, Missouri, and sister to older brother Stefan. Elin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and even though Elin left Winnipeg at the age of three she looks forward to returning every summer to the family cottage at Leaside Beach, which was built the year she was born. The family summer vacation centres around being at íslendingadagurinn and Elin has attended faithfully for as long as she can remember. Elin is honoured to be an attendant to the Fjallkona, Lenore Good. This experience will be even more memorable as she fulfills her duties with her cousin Sonja in this spe- cial year 2000. Elin will be entering grade 9 in the fall and enjoys soccer, field hockey, diving, and plays the clarinet in the jun- ior band. Elin is proud of her Canadian and Icelandic heritage and takes every opportunity to enlighten her classmates about Canada and Iceland. Her Amma and Afi, Sylvia and Stefan Sigurdson of White Rock BC, originally of Riverton, provide her with wonderful stories of her heritage which she eagerly uses for school projects. Her paternal great grandparents were S.V. and Kristrun Sigurdson and Marus and Vilborg Brynjolfson of Riverton, Manitoba. Sonja June Sigurdson Sonja, a senior at Sentinel Secondary school in West Vancou- ver, BC, has received many Academic and Achievement Honour Awards through her high school years. Her interests are diverse, including competitive swim- ming, sailing, scuba diving, and karate. On the West Coast Mountains she is an active snowborder and skier. A keen traveller, her interest in art enabled her to visit Romev Sienna, Florence, and London in 2000 and New York City in 1999 as part of her studies. A significant outside interest start- ed in 1996 when she participated in a conference in Anaheim. That year, a youth component was first included in the International Society of Professionals In Dispute Resolution (SPIDR) headquaitered in Washington, DC. She has subsequently attended annual conferences in Orlando, Portland, and Baltimore. A inember of the program committee since 1998, she is presently one of three co-chairper- sons for the conferece in Albuquerque, New Mexco in 2000. Sonja is the daughter of Glenn and Maureen Sigurdson of Vancouver, and the granddaughter of Stefan and Sylvia Sigurdson of White Rock, BC, former- ly of Riverton. Her summers are spent at the famioly cottage at Leaside Beach at the narrows of Lake Winnipeg waterskiing with her cousins. With a dad a former president, and an amma a former Fjallkona, she can count among her many achievements having been an enthusiastic participant in the Icelandic Festival every year. New Iceland: From Dream to Reality New Iceland: From Dream to Reality Presented by Nelson Gerrard WHAT FAR-REACHING FORCES of man and nature shaped the dream of a “New Iceland”? How did this vision become a reality on the iso- lated shores of Lake Winnipeg 125 years ago? Who were the “dream- smiths” of New Iceland, and how did they nurture this fledgling settlement through its perilous first years? Though seven successive generations have maintained a strong sense of identity and pride in their heritage, much of New Iceland’s story is now fading from memory as the Icelandic language diminishes. It is this unique story that the New Iceland Heritage Museum pledges to keep alive for future genera- tions, and it is this story we now cele- brate on the 125th anniversary of the founding of New Iceland.
