Lögberg-Heimskringla - 28.07.2000, Síða 16
16 • Lögberg-Heimskringla » Friday 28 July 2000 Festival Section Newfor 2000 Thingvellir * Nýja Island The Miij.ennium project of the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba will center on the theme of Thingvellir; the. place where the Icelandic people assembled to hear the laws of the land and see justice carried out. “Thingvellir Nýja ísland” will be a “community” that will be located with- in the grounds of the Gimli Park. A series of open tents will be sét up and representatives from various communi- ties that have a strong and active Icelandic presence will occupy these tents. Each tent will display historical artifacts and cultural exhibits unique to their area, all of which will be consis- tent with the mandate of the project—to preserve and promote the Icelandic cul- ture and to bring together people of Icelandic descent to celebrate the accomplishments of the Icelandic set- tlements in Canada. Each community tent will also act as Homecoming Headquarters for peo- ple who have roots in that area and who will be attending the Icelandic Festival. It will be an area where these peole can connect with family and friends who will be in Gimli for the millennium cel- ebration of Islendingadagurinn. The community tents will encircle a central “common area” which will serve as a gathering spot for people to meet and greet, renew friendships and to cel- ebrate our heritage and achievements.
