Don, a Toronto based team member of the V.I.P. (Valuing Icelandic Presence) Millennium Campaign Cabinet, charged to raise campaign funds, said, “I am delighted to see history in the making and to stand in the future home of this world renowned library collection. This will be a showcase that speaks to all Icelanders, preserving our culture and celebrating our heritage.” Mr. Hannes Heimisson, Director of Information and Cultural Aífairs in the Department of Foreign Affairs, met with members of the VIP Millennium Committee and toured the Collection with Sigrid Johnson on June 7. He has a special interest in the Collection because of his government’s major donation. While in Manitoba he was actively preparing for President Olafur Ragnar Grímsson’s state visit to Manitoba August 4 to 7. On June 12, 2000 Guðrún Ágústs- dóttir accompanied Gerður Steinthorsdóttir, a teacher in Icelandic College, and her husband, Gunnar Stefansson, a producer of literature and cultural programs for Icelandic State Radio, on a visit to the Icelandic Collection. Gerdur’s grandfather, Jonas Jónsson frá Hriflu, a minister in the Icelandic government for many years, came to Manitoba in the late 30s and was the driving force behind the Icelandic Government’s decision to select the University of Manitoba as a depository of Icelandic publications. He played a key role in the development of the Icelandic Collection, as books and peri- odicals were sent from Iceland to the University’s Library from 1939 to 1978. Dr. Gudjon Sigurbjornsson, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at National University Hospital, Iceland, visited on June 13, following his attendance at the twelfth World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Montreal. While in Winnipeg he also met with Consul General Svavar Gestsson at the Consulate of Iceland office and Gunnur Isfeld, Lögberg- Heimskringla editor. Sigrid gives full credit to the con- tributors to the VIP Millennium Campaign, especially the Government of Iceland and Eimskip, whose combined commitment of $1 million has provided a substantial financial base for these developments. Icelandic Canadians across the country collectively and indi- vidually have contributed, and further gifts are continuing to strengthen the cof- fers. All donations are very gratefully received.
