The Wilhelm Kristjanson
Memorial Scholarship of
$500.00 is offered by the
Icelandic Festival of Manitoba
to a student who has completed
one or more years of post-sec-
ondary studies and who will be
continuing his or her studies
the following year. The selec-
tion is based on academic
results as well as on qualities
of leadership and community
service.
The 2002 winner of this
scholarship is Jillian LeMaistre
of Flin Flon, Man. Jillian has
just completed her first year at
the University of Manitoba,
studying for a Science Degree
with the plan to specialize in
Biochemistry. Her grade point
average was a very impressive
4.4. She plans to obtain a PhD
and be involved in medical
research.
Jillian does not only excel
academically, but has a very
impressive community
involvement. She was one of
only four students chosen for
the Oddfellows and Rebekkah
Lodges’ Pilgrimage for Youth
to the United Nations in July of
2000. The choice was based on
academic marks, leadership,
community service and public
speaking. She was a finalist in
the speech competition held
during this trip. Her topic was
based on The Convention of
the Rights of the Child. In her
spare time she painted benches
in Central Park as a communi-
ty service while in New York.
In addition, Jillian was part
of the Champion Program
where she was a presenter on
peer tutoring dealing with
drugs and alcohol. In her ath-
letic life she was asked to act as
a role model and make presen-
tations to grade five and six on
peer pressure, drugs and alco-
hol. Her responsibility was to
also arrange visits with teach-
ers, plan lessons, and make
presentations. Other communi-
ty activities include acting as a
communion assistant in her
church as well as performing
scripture reading and acting as
a Sunday School assistant. She
sings Christmas carols to sen-
iors in personal care homes at
Christmas. She has acted as a
relief secretary in her high
school and participated in the
Heart and Stroke Big Bike
Ride fundraiser. Jillian has pro-
vided peer tutoring with stu-
dents who were experiencing
difficulty with chemistry and
math as well as acting as a
provincial election worker.
Jillian is an accomplished
musician who has sung for
many community events
including being a soloist in a
jazz ensemble. She has acted in
many drama productions and
helped raise funds to offset her
class’s graduation costs. Jillian
has done all of this while main-
taining a high average. She has
twice achieved the highest
overall academic average in
her year while taking the rigor-
ous courses offered. Jillian was
named to both the Honor Roll
and the Scholastic Athletic
Team for all three of her High
School years. She won the
Governor General’s History
Medal which is offered to the
Hapnot student earning the
highest Canadian history mark
for the year. As one of her
teachers commented, “Jill is a
successful, self-confident
young lady who is not afraid to
take a leadership role and is
also thoughtful and empathetic
to others in volunteering her
time”.
Jillian is the daughter of
Mark and Karen (Timlick)
LeMaistre of Flin Flon, Man.
Her maternal great great great-
grandparents were Jón Jónsson
Sigurðsson and Sigþrúður
Sigurðardóttir of Iceland. Her
great great-grandfather was
Sigurður Jónsson (Johnson),
born November 8, 1840 at
Jillian LeMaistre
Njarðvík, Iceland. His wife
was Hansína Jóhannsdóttir,
born May 14, 1856 in
Þingeyjarsýsla, Iceland.
Jillian’s Amma is Sigrun
Gudfinna Timlick (nee
Johnson) of Winnipeg, who
was born in Amaranth, Man. in
1919. She lived with her
Amma while attending
University. It was while she
was with her Amma that Jillian
learned to make vínarterta.
President Tim Arnason and
the entire Icelandic Festival of
Manitoba extend our heartiest
congratulations to Jillian and
wish her much success, health
and happiness in all her future
endeavors.
