trade; to develop and foster Icelandic-
Canadian relations; to provide business
information to the members; and to ren-
der assistance to the Canadian and Ice-
landic govemments with respect to busi-
ness relations between Iceland and Cana-
da, Icelandic-Canadian trade and Ice-
landic-Canadian relations.
If they are not already on the Board,
all the honorary consuls in Canada may
attend meetings of the directors, as may
Icelandic trade commissioners in Canada
and the Ambassador of Iceland to Cana-
da.
Until now the North American Ice-
landic Chamber of Commerce has dealt
with the interests of both the United
States and Canada. Pétur Óskarsson, one
of two managing directors of Iceland
Naturally in New York City, represented
the North American Chamber at the
meeting. Iceland Naturally, a five-year
project started in the year 2000, was
founded by the Govemment of Iceland
and six private companies with interests
in North America.
Pétur said that they sponsor three
kinds of events: every other year, in New
York or Washington, DC, a gathering of
business people from Iceland and the
United states; every year two or three
smaller events which focus on a special
topic; and one event a year sponsored
with the other Nordic chambers. This
May the Nordic groups met to consider
the reconstruction of Iraq and what role
the businesses of Nordic countries might
play. Culture is tied to these various
events.
Present at the founding meeting of
the ICCC was Valgerður Svenisdóttir,
Minister of Industry and Commerce in
Iceland’s govemment. In explaining that
Iceland is “open for business in the glob-
al economy,” she said, “Canada and Ice-
land have a lot to gain from increased
trade. They have rnuch in common, such
as honesty and business ethics.” And
their population densities are about the
same - three people to one square kilo-
metre.
She cited Iceland’s low corporate
tax, amongst the lowest in the world, as
an attractive incentive for doing business
in Iceland. The tax is just 18%. She also
pointed out that Iceland, as a member of
the EEA, could serve as a gateway to the
market of 450 million in the twenty-eight
member countiies.
Other benefits of doing business in
Iceland are: its highly educated and mul-
tilingual workforce, its clean and inex-
pensive hydroelectric power (per capita
electricity is highest in Iceland, followed
by Canada and Norway), the low cost of
leased intemet lines, and its geographic
location, which makes it a gateway to
entering the intemal market of Europe.
Following the informative and inter-
esting meeting, the attendees and others
gathered to enjoy the rnusic of the Sig-
urður Rossason Trio (Sigurður on sax,
Gunnar Hrafnsson on bass and Gunnar
Gunnarsson on piano) and nibble on Ice-
landic delicacies prepared under the
supervision of Siggi Hall, well-known
Icelandic chef.
There were several other interesting
presentations at the founding meeting of
the ICCC. They will be reported upon in
later issues of the L-H.

H0stfest’s RiverRun Great Value For Family
Trinity Health’s Norsk Hpstfest 8k
RiverRun has, in three years, grown
to be an event for the whole family. Held
in Minot, ND in conjunction with the
largest Scandinavian heritage festival in
the US, the run and walk takes place on
Saturday, October llth.
According to race director Scott
Simmons, the RiverRun is one of the pre-
mier runAvalk events in the state. “No
other race, short of the Trestle Valley
marathon, compares,” said Simmons.
The race features the fastest 8K course in
the state, starting at the Scandinavian
Heritage Park, on the command of
celebrity starter Charley Pride, and fin-
ishes in front of the Hpstfest’s Great Hall
at the state fairgrounds.
“We try to offer the runner, walker
and jogger more than any other event,”
said Simmons. Participants all receive
full colour T-shirts, free entry to the
MSU vs Mary football game and are
treated to a post race paity with music,
food, beer and giveaways. All finishers
of the 8k course, which is just less than
5-miles, also receive a collectible poster
print by local artist Jon Olson suitable
for framing.
Prizes for the 8k race also fall in line
with the event’s efforts to be the best. The
overall male and female winners each
take home $200 cash prizes, while win-
ners in twelve different age groups
receive free tickets to Saturday’s Hpstfest
events. The grand prize for anyone
breaking the US all-comers record for 8k
is a one year lease on a Real Builder’s
condominium.
The event also features a 1-mile Troll
Chase for children eleven-and-under that
includes a drawing for a Planet Pizza par-
ty and free entry to the Hpstfest with paid
admission of an adult. “Kids love to run,”
said Simmons, “and it’s great to see them
out chasing our big hairy trolls.” What’s
more, the school with the largest partici-
pation eams a cash grant.

Eftir að þau koma úr sundinu fara þau fá sér hádegismat á næsta pylsubar og
kaupa sér pylsur og gos og pabbi borgar. í eftirmat fá stelpurnar rjómaís. Síðan
er farið í luiðarráp og allskonar föt og munir skoðaðir. Þau fara meir að segja
inn í föndur búðina liennar Erlu og skoða allt föndrið sem hún hefur á boðstól-
num. Síðan vill mamma þeirra endilega fara og skoða Gaujulund, garður sem er
staðsettur út í miðju hrauninu þar sem sjórinn var áður en eldgosið var í
Heimaey 1973. Þessi garður er algjör vin í eyðimörkinni, mjög skrautlegur og
skemmtilega staðsettur. Gauja byrjaði að setja niður plöntur þar fyrir fímmtán
árum síðan. Hún flutti mold í fötum og setti ofan á hraunið og plantaði síðan
blómum sem hún flutti með sér frá meginlandinu. Tveimur árum seinna byrjaði
maðurinn hennar, Elli, að hjálpa henni og í dag eru allskonar plöntur bæði
stórar og smáar sem vaxa þarna. Þegar þau konia inn að garðinum eru Gauja
og Elli að vinna þar og þau fara að spjalla við þau og skoða fallega garðinn þeir-
ra.

they go shopping and look at all kinds of clothes and things. They even go into
Erla’s craft shop and look at all the handicrafts she has for sale. Then their mom
is determined to go and look at Gauja’s grove, a garden, which is situated in the

middie of the lava fíeld where the sea used to be before the eruption on Heymaey
in 1973. This garden is an absolute oasis in the desert, very decorative and in an
interesting location. Gauja began to put down plants there about fífteen years
ago. She brought soil in pails and put it on top of the lava and then planted flow-
ers, which she brought with her from the mainland. Two years later her hus-
band, Elli, began to lielp her and today there are all kinds of plants, both large
and small that grow there. When they arrive at the garden botli Gauja and Elli
are working there and they begin to chat with them and look at their beautiful
garden.
