Norseman Returns From Russia
The Leif Ericson Viking Ship
Norseman has safely returned
from a journey to St. Petersburg, Rus-
sia in time to sail on the Schuylkill in
its home port of Philadelphia on Octo-
ber 9. The first European proven to set
foot on North America, Leif Ericson, is
celebrated each year on this date by a
noon ceremony and symbolic landing
at the Viking Statue of Þorfinnur
karlsefni, just above boat house row.
Later the same day, the Annual Leif
Ericson Day Dinner will be held in
honor of Leif Ericson and his fellow
Viking explorers at the Springhaven
Club in Wallingford, PA. Philadelphia
area residents of Nordic descent and
representatives of the Nordic countries
will be present at both events, organ-
ized by the Leif Ericson Society and
the Viking Ship Norseman.
The widely-travelled Norseman
was invited to join half a dozen other
Viking ship replicas in St. Petersburg,
Russia, to join in the tricentennial cele-
bration of that city’s founding by Czar
Peter the Great in the year 1703, as
Russia’s Window to the West. The ship
was transported to the Baltic Sea
through the courtesy of sponsor
Atlantic RO-RO, Inc.
Eighteen Vikings from the Norse-
man crew joined the ship in Russia to
take part in the Viking Invasion, which
took place at the end of July. A Viking
encampment was set up on the shore
near the fortress of St. Peter and Paul,
directly across the river Neva from the
famous Hermitage Museum of Art.
This was the only American Viking
ship to take part, others were from
Sweden and from Norway together
with a local Russian Viking ship. The
Norseman crew was led by Len
Gustafsson of Princeton, NJ, and by
Marty Martinson of Wallingford, PA.
October 9 has been proclaimed as
Leif Ericson Day in the US by all Pres-
idents since President Lyndon B. John-
son and by Act of Congress in a bill
sponsored by former US Senator and
Viking descendant Hubert H.
Humphrey of Minnesota. This day rec-
ognizes the landing of Leif Ericson and
his crew of Norsemen at a site now
called L’Anse Aux Meadows, NF in
about the year 1000. Leif’s father,
known as Eric the Red, was born in
Norway and settled in Iceland, where
Leif was bom. Later, the family moved
with a group of others to settle Green-
land in about 995. Leif and his crew
sailed from Greenland in his father’s
ship to explore lands sighted further
west by another Viking sailor who was
blown off course. Several later expedi-
tions to that site by other members of
Leif’s family, and several years of set-
tlement are recorded in the Icelandic
Sagas. Further research in the past thir-
ty years has confirmed L’Anse Aux
Meadows as the site of a Viking settle-
ment and the location is now on the list
of World Historic Sites. It is main-
tained as a historic site by Parks Cana-
da and recognized by nearly all schol-
ars as an authentic Viking site dating to
about the year 1000.
International expeditions of the
Norseman include sailing in Stock-
holm, Sweden, in 1998, sailing at
L'Anse Aux Meadows, NF for the Leif
Ericson Millennium celebrations in the
year 2000, and this years’ sail in St.
Petersburg, Russia. Between interna-
tional sailings, the ship appears at vari-
ous festivals, shows, and sailing events
up and down the East coast and west to
Cleveland, Jamestown NY, and even to
Georgetown, Texas. It has sailed the
waters of the Delaware, Hudson,
Potomac, and Chesapeake rivers and
many others to help inform Americans
of the accomplishments of Vikings in
exploring North America.
The visit to Russia symbolized the
role of the Vikings in founding the
Russian Empire beginning in the year
862. Three Swedish brothers, Rurik,
Truvor, and Sineus came to Rus-land in
that year as Viking Chieftains to estab-
lish justice among quarreling local
tribes. Their descendants became the
ancestors of later Russian Czars.
The Norseman represented the far
reaches of the West-traveling Vikings
in joining with the historic travels of
Vikings into Russia and beyond, over a
thousand years ago.
