36-year-old record
broken in Iceland
Recently a record atten-
dance of 20,204 watched Ice-
land beat Italy 2 - 0 in a friend-
ly soccer match at Lau-
gardalsvöllur, the National
Stadium, in Reykjavík, Ice-
land.
In 1968 about 18,000
spectators were at a European
match between the Icelandic
club Valur and Benfica of Por-
tugal. The seating capacity of
the stadium is about 7,000.
Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen,
who plays for the English club
Chelsea, and Gylfi Einarsson
of Lilleström in Norway
scored against Italy.
The preliminary competi-
tion of the 2006 FIFA World
Cup has just started and Ice-
land is in a group with Swe-
den, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hun-
gary and Malta.

Good results for Iceland in Athens

Þórey Edda Elísdóttir and
Rúnar Alexandersson got Ice-
land’s best results at the Olympic
Games in Athens in August.
Iceland had 26 athletes com-
peting at the games. Þórey Edda
Elísdóttir flew over 4.55 m in the
women’s pole vault and finished
in fifth place. Yelena Isinbayeva
of Russia set a world record, 4.91
m, and won the gold.
Rúnar Alexandersson got
9.725 points for his exercises on
the pommel horse and finished in
seventh place. This is the best
result an Icelandic gymnast has
reached at Olympic Games.
World champion Haibin Teng
from China got 9.837 points and
won the gold.
Iceland has won three
medals at Olympic Games. Vil-
hjálmur Einarsson won silver in
triple jump at the Olympic
Games in Melboume in 1956.
Bjami J. Friðriksson took the
bronze in his weight in judo in
Los Angeles in 1984, and four
years ago Vala Flosadóttir won
the bronze in women’s pole vault
in Sydney.

12-year tradition of fun

“Our main objective is to
raise money for the Manitoba
Heart and Stroke Foundation
and to have fun,” says Dennis
Stefanson about the golf tour-
nament that he, wilh help from
relatives and friends, has been
organizing at the North Air
Golf and Country Club in
Arnes, Manitoba, every third
Saturday in August since 1993.
The tournament has been
full every year. Twenty-two
teams of four golfers each can
participate and by doing so
they support the Manitoba
Heart and Stroke Foundation.
“We made 3,000 to 4,000 dol-
lars a year when we started but
now we raise about 11,000 to
12,000 a year,” Dennis says.

named after Dennis’s father
Eric Stefanson, who died of a
heart attack in 1977 at only 64
years of age. Later Dennis sug-
gested that another trophy in
memory of Frank Amason of
Gimli, who also died of a heart
attack at 64, should be added to
the tournament and his propos-
al was welcomed.
“This is a popular small
toumament and we all have
fun,” Dennis says.
