Vancouver artist Heidi
Maddess opens a new show
this month, featuring work cre-
ated in Iceland.
Maddess, who also works
for the Emily Carr Institute,
says that all the works in the
exhibition were created while
she was an artist in residences
in Reykjavík last November.
“For me the opportunity to stay
in Iceland for an extended peri-
od of time so I could investi-
gate my heritage as well as cre-
ate artwork was truly amaz-
ing,” she says. “I found the
landscapes were so powerful
and raw, and that their inspira-
tion manifested in my work so
evidently surprised me. I didn’t
have an expectation of the
imagery I would use before I
landed in Iceland, as it was
important for me to wait and

Donated $20,000 U.S. to Iceland
A museum in Eyrarbakki, Iceland has
been restored, thanks to generous donations
from three Americans of Icelandic descent
who donated $20,000 (U.S.) to the building.
Eggjaskúrinn, or “the Egg Shed,” is by
Húsið á Eyrarbakka, a folk museum show-
casing local history and tracing the different
roles played in one of Iceland’s oldest surviv-
ing buildings. In 1993 it was proposed that
the Eggjaskúrinn should be restored and
that was made possible with $10,000 (U.S).
from Arni Richter in Wisconsin and $10,000
(U.S). from Hannes M. Andersen and Jean-
nie Roonings. The total cost of the restora-
tion was about $60,000 (U.S).
An aviary and a collection of eggs will be
in a showcase in Eggjaskúrinn as well as a
memorial plaque in commemoration of the
Icelanders from Eyrarbakki who emigrated
to the New World.
Gimli teen gets some ‘space’

Gimli’s Kai Olson recently
got his fírst taste of work in
outer space.
Having joined #182 G M
Stefnufastur Royal Canadian
Air Cadets in Gimli when he
was 12 years old, Kai is start-
ing his fifth year with them.
This past summer, he
applied for the Glider School
but was not accepted. This did
not deter him from looking at
other possibilities and one of
these was the Space Camp at
St. Jean, Quebec.
To qualify, he had to write
a 500-word essay as to why he
wanted to go to this camp, as
well as have a report card

showing high marks in mathe-
matics and the sciences. Kai
and another cadet frorn Win-
nipeg were the only two chosen
from Manitoba. They joined 68
other cadets from across Cana-
da for an intensive three-week
course called “Introduction to
Aerospace.”
Classes were taught in both
English and French including
such subjects as physics,
orbital mechanics, solar sys-
tems and the planets, among
others. There also was experi-
ence in the simulator, which
was the same size as the space-
craft Endeavor. When asked if
this hadn’t made him sick, Kai
stated that no one got sick dur-
ing this exercise.
Kai felt that not getting
into the Glider School had
turned into a “silver lining” by
allowing him to attend the
Space Camp. He said it had
been “awesome.” He also made
good friends and keeps in
touch with them.
Kai’s parents are Elaine
Dilworth and Kris Olson of
Gimli.
