Kristin attended Adams El- ementary School, James Monroe Junior High School, and Ballard High School. Throughout her school years she distin- guished herself as an honours student at all levels. From the age of nine she studied violin with various teachers. At all secondary school levels she was the concert-mistress in the orches- tras, including All-City and All Northwest Orchestras; additionally, Kristin studied advanced violin with William Hedley, Emanuel Zetlin, Alexander Schneider and also conducting with Thor Johnson at the U of W where she earned her BA in Music and Literature; in her fifth and sixth graduate years she received her Primary and Secondary Teaching Cre- dentials. Throughout her adult years, Kris- tin was a member of the WEA and the Musician’s Union Local 76; she was always active as a violin soloist playing professíonally for many events in the Northwest with various chamber groups as well as the Seattle Symphony where she remained for over 33 years. She also taught privately many students on the violin. Before joining the Symphony, she had been a music teacher at the second- ary level in the Bremerton and Seattle School Districts. After retirement from the Sym- phony, she continued as an enthusiastic chamber music player-even forming her own string quartet, which met regularly for many years. In addition to her musical activities, Kristin was a member of the U of W Alumnae Association Phrateres, the PANAG (Pacific NW Needle Arts Guild), the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, and a member of the lcelandic Club; then, dur- ing and after some twenty-four special- ized art classes, she painted a number of impressive works. She has also trans- lated lcelandic autobiographies tracing her parents’ life and times. In 1948 she married Seattle com- poser and music teacher, Egil Smedvig. Together they spent a graduate year studying at Mills College in Oakland, California where Egil was a student of Darius Milhaud while Kristin studied vio- lin with Frank Houser of the San Fran- cisco Symphony. Subsequently, the cou- ple, either together or separately, made some seventeen European and Middle- Eastern trips-some with their children. Each of their three children have distinguished themselves in their own interests. Jodene graduated from the U of W and teaches public school and has a son. Rolf studied at Boston University before joining the Boston Symphony at the age of twenty, and he now heads and tours with his own Empire Brass Quintet, and is married to a professional model Kelly Holub; they have three chil- dren, two of them twins. Kristin and Egil’s youngest daughter, Siri, graduated from Harvard and lived in Saudi Arabia with her husband before moving to Concord, Massachusetts; she has one daughter and now is active as a violinist and artist painter. In the summer of 2002, Kristin took both daughters, Siri and her daughter Iman and Jodene and her son Rex, for a month trip to lceland. Kristin Aurora Smedvig has been married for 56 years and has lived at 12550-9111 NW in Seattle’s Broadview District for about forty years. She has a sister, Elin McDougal and a brother Mar- vin Jonsson, both from Seattle; in ad- dition to her immediate family, she has numerous relatives living in lceland.
