It is a serious matter — something many plan to do and few ac- compish. Talking about it and writing about it makes some people rich. Participating in the program makes others sweat. In the beginning of the year, four relatively young men start- ed in what is called the Gimli Diet and Exercise Program (the name, GDEP, is supposed to re- mind the participants of the fact that one Gains weight by Drink- ing and Eating big Portions) with the objective of losing 80 pounds together by Easter. It was stated that by the end of the year a large portion of them would have dis- appeared. Now, less than four months after they started the program, they have reached their first ob- jectives. Not only have they lost 10% of their total weight, but also one of them is gone. He went back to Iceland in the beginning of April, weighing less than ever before and talking about coming back when he could retum on a child’s ticket. Since he had to pay a similar amount for overweight luggage on his flight from Winnipeg to Toronto as for the ticket from Winnipeg to Minneapolis via Toronto he assumed that the less he weighed, the less he would have to pay for his next ticket. As mentioned above, he is rela- tively young and therefore time is not a factor. In the meantime his total weight has been sub- tracted from the total weight of the four relatively young men. In other words they have lost more than 20% of the total weight just because of his decision to retum to Iceland. Soon after the relatively four young men started their pro- gram, a group of three relatively young women working out in the gym in Gimli challenged them. They said they would lose more weight in the same period of time and suggested that the winners would get a trip of their choice at the cost of the losers. After a few weeks, the wom- en realized that this was a com- petition they could not win, the main reason being that they did not have to lose much weight, if any. Yet they wanted to win the first prize and organized trips for themselves. As a result, one went to Alberta, another to BC and the third one to Mexico. However they all retumed and their total weight did not change. The actual winners have not claimed their prize yet, but the competition made the battle with the extra pounds more fun. Actually they have had so much fun working seriously on losing weight that they have decided to continue in the GDEP program with a new objective in mind: you gain some and you lose some.
